Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
The Business Efficiency and Process Improvement Department is responsible for providing safe, efficient and dependable transportation to commuters on all Metra-operated lines: Milwaukee North and West, Rock Island, Metra Electric, SouthWest Service, North Central Service and Heritage Corridor and those lines operating under purchase of service agreements: BNSF and Union Pacific. In addition to all employees directly involved in providing train service, The Business Efficiency and Process Improvement Department also oversees the Rules Department, Dispatching Office, Crew Management Center, Station Services, Customer Service, Ticket Services and GPS Center.
Reporting to the Manager, Service Design, the Schedule and Service Design Analyst 2, functions at the intermediate level performing moderately complex duties relative to analyzing train operations data and developing and modifying train operating schedules. Collect and analyze run times, rail capacity, passenger loading trends, and GPS data to use in developing operating schedules and schedules for special projects, scenarios, and events. Develop schedules that comply with operating best practices, ridership demands, and ensure operational efficiency. Prepare reports of ridership, on-time performance, and operating efficiencies to assist management in decision making. Assist in analyzing proposals for new routes or services using scheduling software and provide management with options that will best meet customer needs and operational requirements. Assist with train modeling assignments. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

- Bachelor's degree in Transportation and Urban Planning, or a related field or any combination of education and experience that equals four (4) years in transportation scheduling or planning.
- In addition to #1, must have (3) three years of transportation planning or scheduling experience.
- Good knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation planning and scheduling.
- Good knowledge of scheduling software.
- Good knowledge of railroad operations and issues affecting on-time performance.
- Good analytical and organizational skills.
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- Good math skills, specifically statistical analysis.
- Proficient in using transportation scheduling and planning software and Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to analyze performance data, prepare reports, and make presentations.
- Ability to learn and use modeling software.
- Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to operate a vehicle.
- Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
- Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
Preferences:
- Experience in scheduling software.
