Under the proximate supervision of a practitioner, the non-credentialed Respiratory Therapist Assistant (RTA), performs respiratory care procedures.
Employment as a non-credentialed Respiratory Therapist Assistant (RTA), expires on the earliest of the following:
The date the employee is issued a license in Respiratory Therapy;
The date the employee ceases to be a student in good standing in a respiratory care program; or
Six (6) months after the date that the employee graduates from a respiratory care program.
Requirements:
Recent graduate, or currently enrolled and in good standing in a respiratory care program.
Must be BLS certified
Successful completion of ICU clinicals
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
A non-credential Respiratory Therapist Assistant (RTA) may only perform respiratory care procedures that have been part of a course the individual has successfully completed in the respiratory care program and for which the successful completion has been documented.
The procedures permitted may be performed only:
on adult patients who are not critical care patients; and
under the proximate supervision of a practitioner.
“Proximate supervision” means a situation in which an individual is:
responsible for directing the actions of another individual; and
in the facility and is physically close enough to be readily available if needed by the supervised individual.
An RTA shall meet in person at least one (1) time each working day with their supervising practitioner or a designated respiratory care practitioner to review the RTA’s clinical activities. The supervising practitioner or a designated respiratory care practitioner shall review and countersign the entries that the RTA makes in a patient’s medical record not more than seven (7) calendar days after the RTA makes the entries
Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
