The current full yearly range for this position is $84,396 - $115,549 

This is a wonderful job for candidates who enjoy being out and about walking around covering the entire site throughout their workday. This position has opportunities to interact with every staff member at the facility, first responders, and others daily. Rarely will two days be the same. This position is primarily on-site at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium but could involve limited work at Northwest Trek or other Metro Parks Tacoma facilities. Employees of the Zoo and aquarium are passionate about conservation, sustainability, and fun. This position directly contributes to the safety and security of our staff, our visitors, and the animals in our care.

Position Information
Under the direction of an assigned manager, the Safety and Security Administrator is responsible for monitoring systems, procedures, and protocols that ensure the safety and security of guests, team members, property, and physical assets. This role develops and implements standard operating manuals, acts as safety and security and emergency management trainer to the zoo team, and helps to ensure the requirements of state and federal safety regulations as well as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums are met. This position also contributes to positive guest experiences and performs other duties as required.

  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.

  • Develops, plans, coordinates, administers, and maintains facility safety and security requirements and implements procedures for safeguarding the facility, staff, volunteers, and animal collection.
  • Responds to emergency situations, conducts investigations, and completes incident reports.
  • Develops, plans, coordinates, and administers department wide safety and security training, drills, and emergency preparedness.
  • Documents, reports, and reviews safety and security training and drills with the Safety and Drill Committees.
  • Coordinates and collaborates safety and security efforts with cross-departmental and District teams to ensure continuity, awareness, and efficient operations. 
  • Develops, plans, coordinates, and administers safety and security audits and inspection plans.
  • Maintains various records, reports and inventories and advises management and cross departmental teams of deficiencies and provides recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintains the facility calendar for drills, safety inspections, and training; includes assisting with contracted vendors for life safety system annual inspections.
  • Communicates all site safety and security related policies and procedures to staff and volunteers to ensure they are practiced uniformly across department.
  • Provides ZEED site safety and security training to new employees and volunteers and conducts annual refresh training for all staff and volunteers. Coordinates specialized training requests with District staff and/or vendors. 
  •  Leads and facilitates the oversite of the firearms team including coordination of logistics, training, budget, and maintaining of records after qualification.
  • Manages parking lot flow and issues as needed.
  • Ensures security coverage of facility through contracted services to meet organizational needs.
  • Assists management as a liaison to local law enforcement, fire department, Tacoma Public Schools, and other agencies and ensures communication is shared across District as appropriate.
  • Administers facility wide AED upkeep.
  • Administers and facilitates first aid and CPR programs and on-going training for employees.
  • Maintains a professional and respectable demeanor throughout the course of providing safety and security.
  • Assists with special projects and helps other employees as needed.
  • Actively contributes to positive guest experiences.
  • Serves as Incident Commander for a variety of emergencies on site such as injured staff members, injured visitors, natural disaster, unruly visitor, and others.
  • Three years of security, emergency management or relevant working experience in a management role required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in emergency management, security management, safety management, criminal justice, or related field. An additional 4 years of related experience can substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Become qualified on facility firearms response team before end of probationary period and maintain qualification thereafter.
  • Incident Command System courses 100, 200, 300, and 700 completions required within first 90 days of employment unless already completed and certificates provided.
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Attain CPR/AED Instructor Certification within one year of hire date.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security operations, safety practices, and incident investigation in a public institution.
  • Ability to professionally, effectively, and appropriately interact and communicate with others, both in person and through phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, analyze situations, and make sound business decisions.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and manage time effectively.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of correct grammatical usage, punctuation, etc.
  • Ability to create and manage budgets.
  • Ability to train and supervise employees effectively and proactively.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and delegate responsibility and duties.
  • Knowledge of management practices to direct staff.
  • Ability to work a highly flexible schedule; weekend, evening, overnights, holiday, and irregular hours will be required.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to understand and follow all safety regulations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to arrive to work on time and maintain a positive attendance record.
  • Ability to always serve in every respect as a goodwill ambassador for the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park and Metro Parks Tacoma in contacts with zoo visitors and the public.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and politely with guest questions and misbehavior.
  • Excellent communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, partners, and/or the public.

  • Ability to regularly travel assigned areas several times per day and efficiently enter all assigned areas.
  • Ability to properly lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to see, hear, and speak clearly to monitor surroundings, detect potential threats or issues, and communicate effectively with others.
  • Climb, kneel or crouch to move around zoological environment and/or complete reviews or investigations.  
HAZARDS
  • Contact with rude or abusive individuals.
  • Possible exposure to ill and/or potentially dangerous animals.
