Job Description Summary: The Membership Development Specialist is responsible for promoting the Chamber and its products and services to prospective and existing members. Sales of membership to prospects and retention of existing members are the key functions of this position. They will identify prospects, determine their needs, communicate the Chamber’s value and complete the sale. They will drive a sales strategy that projects the Chamber’s message/brand to all of our stakeholders. The Membership Development Specialist works cooperatively with each member of the Chamber staff and volunteers, but they also work independently and are responsible for the success of the Membership Sales Plan. The Membership Development Specialist must be able to conduct “high-level” business interactions independently and as part of a coordinated team.
Skill Requirements/Considerations:
- This position requires a results-oriented and strongly motivated individual who can work in a group or independently when needed
- Prior experience with demonstrated success in sales required, preferably B2B sales
- Must have a hunter mentality with a closer track record
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and planning skills are helpful
- Outstanding writing, communications and computer skills are essential
- Professional demeanor needed: energetic, mature and responsible; high level ability to communicate with tact and respect
- Ability to work cooperatively with Chamber members, prospects and fellow staff members is essential
- Bachelors degree preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Minimal physical effort is required to perform functions in office conditions
- The employee is required to speak, hear, and use hands to operate normal office equipment
- Vision requirements include the ability to read and analyze documents and use a computer
- Occasionally required to lift or carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds; seldom lifts objects weighing up to 30 pounds
- Requires some outside office visits to visit member businesses and other local stakeholders under various conditions
Primary Responsibilities:
- Adhere to the mission and guiding principles of the Metro South (south of Boston) and its affiliate organizations
- Develop and implement effective proactive membership recruitment and retention programs, strategies, and guidelines to ensure the achievement of the pre-determined monthly sales goals as set with the President & CEO and established in the Membership Sales Plan
- Utilize a consultative sales approach to understand the member’s needs and to recommend the appropriate chamber solution that meets/exceeds those needs
- Follow-up with enrollment consistent with Membership Retention Plan to maximize preservation of member accounts
- Manage existing member benefits programs and ensure fulfillment of benefits for new and existing members.
- Coordinate and implement special activities related to membership sales efforts, including membership campaigns and promotional efforts
- Recruit and manage new benefits including identifying and implementing non dues revenue/affinity programs
- Serve as the primary staff liaison for the Ambassador Program and any other committees assigned. Counsel and assist committees in strategies, programs, and projects to carry out objectives
- Working with other chambers and state and national chamber organizations, continuously seek new and improved approaches for enhancing the Chamber’s recruitment and retention efforts
- Provide a strong customer service experience to members
- Complete sales reports for weekly meetings
- Attend Chamber functions and meetings when appropriate
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Plan membership promotional materials and assemble sales folders
- Prepare own staff correspondence, minutes and reports as required.
- Participate in various speaking engagements, both within the Chamber and as a representative of the Chamber or its affiliates
- Respond to member and general public requests for information
- Provide referrals to members when appropriate
- Assist in other aspects of the Chamber’s operations as deemed necessary by the President
