Job Title: Histology Laboratory Technician
FLSA status: Non-Exempt
Department: Clinical
Reports to: Lab Manager
Position Summary: The Histology Technologist is responsible for processing all tissues and fluids submitted to the department, preparing/staining tissue slides and assuring they are available in a timely manner for Pathologist review and interpretation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.
MOHS responsibility:
- Specimen handling, storage, preservation and identification
- Freezing tissue and cutting frozen sections with a microtome
- Staining and placing tissue on slides
- Labeling and storage of slides
- Preparation and mixing of solutions used in MOHS lab
- Use and handling of all materials and reagents
- Disposal of stains and cleaning of glass containers and Petri dishes
- Maintenance and review of all equipment and materials in the lab
- Maintaining and updating OSHA and CLIA records
- Recording daily temperatures of cryostat
- Participating in relative studies by maintaining proper records
- Ensuring a safe environment in the lab according to OSHA standards (i.e. changing fume hood filters, safety glasses, gloves, etc.)
- Maintaining quality control logs for slide review
- Maintaining log for patient identification system
- Ensures service excellence by becoming thoroughly familiar with the Seven Principles of behavior and putting them into practice in carrying out job responsibilities
- Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, Billing compliance and safety guidelines
Derm Path Lab/ Histo Tech responsibility:
- Accessioning and grossing the tissue which includes measuring, inking and cutting, and entering the information into the computer under the patient name.
- Processing and embedding tissues.
- Cutting the tissues on a microtome and mounting on slides for staining.
- H&E stains using an automated stainer or by hand.
- Special Stains using an automated stainer or by hand.
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining using an automated stainer or by hand.
- Daily maintenance of all equipment.
- Routine filing of slides and blocks.
Experience Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in science related field is required.
- Histology tech: 1 year
Education, Licensure & Certification Requirements
- Current CPR Certification
- Current Histology Technician certification
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements
- Knowledge of sterile technique, anatomy, and medications
- Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment
- Ability to efficiently operate all job-related office equipment
- Ability to follow or provide verbal and written instructions
- Basic to intermediate computer operation
- Mathematical and/or analytical ability for basic to intermediate problem solving
- Detail oriented, professional attitude, reliable
- Specialty knowledge of systems relating to job function

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
