The hard-working individual we welcome to our team will be responsible for performing repair, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, asset condition monitoring, and ensuring the safe and effective operation of MCES piping and ancillary systems.

What you would do in this job

  • Troubleshoot and analyze piping systems.
  • Install, dismantle, repair, and recondition all process and domestic piping systems, air conditioning, HVAC, temperature control, pneumatic lines, chemical lines, instrumentation, etc.
  • Disassemble and inspect problematic equipment.
  • Repair defective equipment (making and installing new parts), redesign inefficient equipment, and rig and move equipment.
  • Design, machine, and fabricate all prototype work for new and existing equipment if required.
  • Maintain tools, clean work site, and utilize safety equipment with cooperation and notification of operations personnel.
  • Successfully complete assigned training.
  • Use current technology to effectively complete timesheets and work orders, including documenting work progress, completion notes, and materials used.
  • Be the liaison between Environmental Services staff and contracted pipefitter services.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED AND
  • Four (4) years of related maintenance work experience in a mechanical, heavy industrial, or wastewater setting AND
  • State of Minnesota High-pressure piping journey worker with City of St. Paul Certification of Competency Steam.
License Requirement: Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

  • Knowledge of working with planning and scheduling and using CMMS systems to log work complete, find parts, etc.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, pipefitting/plumbing/HVAC trades practices and procedures for MCES.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the use of various hand tools used in this trade/industry.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to operate, various power tools and equipment related to the pipefitter trade.
  • Ability to install, dismantle, repair, and troubleshoot mechanical/piping equipment.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the operation, installation, preventive maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of equipment, such as piping systems, pumps, HVAC equipment, valving, pipe welding, instrumentation, etc., that is predominant in wastewater treatment process.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, preventive maintenance and asset condition monitoring.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations involving decimals, fractions, addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
  • Ability to make measurements in American and metric units.
  • Ability to work independently, follow written and verbal instructions, and work cooperatively with multiple trades personnel without unnecessary conflict.
  • Ability to effectively complete timesheets, work orders, and check out requests.

Working Conditions and Physical Environment:
Work is performed in an industrial wastewater setting and requires the ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions. Requires travel and driving between primary work site and other work sites. Subject to an environment where fumes and airborne particles are present. Must have physical ability required to perform work in an awkward position or in cramped conditions, including confined spaces where work may require wearing a respirator and fall protection. Requires crouching, kneeling, and stooping for extended periods of time. Performs repetitive motions including bending, twisting, pushing, and pulling. Must have the ability to work in very noisy conditions and around equipment where odorous fumes, oil, grease, and chemicals exist. Must be able to lift to 75 lbs.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test and physical, and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.

If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (if moving from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal background check if the job you're applying for is safety sensitive, is a supervisory or management job, is in the Finance, Information Services, Audit, or Human Resources departments, or has access to financial records, files/databases, cash, vouchers or transit fare cards. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
