Founded in 1937, MSU Federal Credit Union is owned and operated by members of the Michigan State University and Oakland University communities. We offer financial services to MSU and OU faculty, staff, students, alumni association members, and their families as well as a variety of select employee groups.

Position Summary

The Application Administrator is responsible for effective provisions, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of software for MSU Federal Credit Union.  This includes, but is not limited to, supporting all 3rd party applications, researching new patches and software releases, testing and applying software updates, and helping with the configuration of new features.  The position is also responsible for building positive relationships with vendors.  This individual ensures that software systems and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff and members.  This individual will assist project teams with technical issues and implementations.  These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research and development within the project lifecycle; technical analysis and design; and support of staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions.

Work Location

This position is a hybrid role (remote option available) with a combination of working both onsite at the Headquarters 2 building in East Lansing and remotely. A schedule of expected onsite and remote work days will be discussed during the interview process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Application Administrator:

  • Collaboratively works with business units, technical teams, and third-party vendors to create project plans, technical specifications, application diagrams, and technical documentation for new programs that interface with the Credit Union's systems. These programs must conform to department standards, business requirements, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Implement, test, and maintain integrations between applications and other internal and external applications.
  • Serve as technical liaison between third party vendors and the Credit Union.
  • Provide Tier III technical support in accurately troubleshooting or researching software so that problems are resolved quickly without significant interruption to service.
  • Responsible for maintaining the core banking platform including monitoring, support, troubleshooting, upgrades, patching, and implementation of new modules/features.
  • Establish a high level of personal credibility and build strong relationship with team members and departments in the Credit Union.
  • Communicate project progress to project sponsors and management in meetings and by making timely updates to the department’s ticketing and project management systems.
  • Assist in the maintenance of various servers and backups across the Credit Union’s infrastructure.
  • Support the execution and completion of internal and external audits, including remediating findings and working with vendors to remediate findings.
  • Plan, document, and execute projects and proposals from conception to implementation.
  • Create and help maintain technical documentation for programs and systems implemented and supported by the Application Services department.
  • Document/update processes and procedures for supporting applications.
  • Proactively suggest new techniques and technologies to improve system processes and systems reliability.
  • Maintains accurate and appropriate change control records.
  • Plan, prioritize, estimate, manage, and deliver projects and work efforts on time.
  • Recommend modifications to business processes and technology to reduce user problems.
  • Handle application software monitoring, tuning, problem resolution, implementation, configuration, upgrades, and patches.
  • Provides on-call support on a rotating schedule or as needed for emergency situations, including outside of normal business hours.
  • Conduct system maintenance during off-hours as required.
  • Ensure application license and service agreements related to assigned applications are acquired, executed, and renewed as necessary.
  • Keeps management advised of any system, hardware or usage problem whereby the integrity and security of any of the Credit Union’s systems, and/or the level of service provided to members through such mediums is compromised or otherwise impaired
  • Assist with disaster recovery plans on production environment.
  • Participate in training activities within your department or branch and with the learning and talent development department; such training helps to ensure staff compliance with Credit Union policies and state and federal regulations and laws.
  • Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned.

Application Engineer:

  • All Application Administrator duties and responsibilities
  • Develop advanced understanding of applications, supporting infrastructure and systems integration.
  • Have a proven track record of being able to plan, prioritize, estimate, manage, and deliver projects and work efforts on time.
  • Analyze and craft solutions to enterprise level business problems; design, develop, test, and implement Credit Union wide business solutions, often to reduce costs, improve business workflow, and advance the innovation of the organization.
  • Assist developers, functional leads, and infrastructure team in technical support of applications.
  • Coordinate new projects regarding application installations and upgrades.
  • Champions change management through mentoring and influence. Performs application testing, tuning, and debugging for all new application builds, integrations, and procurements for proper incorporation into the enterprise application stack.
  • Provide architecture design reviews and feedback for new and existing systems, making recommendations for design modifications to maximize availability and performance.
  • Interpret and/or discuss information with others, which involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many people.
  • Ensure sufficient logging, monitoring, and alerting strategies around availability, latency, and overall system health
  • Develops, maintains and reports measurements on the health of the project, team, and sprint using agile metrics; and provide communication and updates to business stakeholders
  • Uses historical velocity and planned velocity to assist team with commitments based on capacity – focusing on sustainable pace with reasonable goals that can be delivered with urge
  • Review, evolve, and assist with disaster recovery plans on production environment.
  • Advanced research of applications and current technical trends.
  • Manage and teach others to manage complex situations while demonstrating adaptability, positivity and flexibility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Application Administrator:

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science is preferred.
  • Knowledge of installing and deploying applications on current Windows platforms.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude, approachable demeanor, and commitment to excellence.
  • Aptitude to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and handle frequent change, delays, or unexpected events with poise.
  • Basic understanding of databases and RDBMS.
  • Familiarity with VMWare, Active Directory, DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP/S.
  • Familiarity working with Windows Server.
  • Ability to read and understand complex computer system documentation; this job requires some technical writing skills for creating documentation for new and existing applications and their API’s.
  • Experience with system and product performance, reliability, and availability.
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, questioning skills, and ability to relate to other people at their knowledge level.
  • Able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks independently, while remaining flexible to changing requirements.

  • Demonstrated functional knowledge with Microsoft Windows 10, Server 2012 to current, O365, Azure cloud platform (including AAD), Active Directory/Exchange/File and Sharing Services/DNS and SharePoint Online.
  • Familiarity with SQL, SAML, .NET, C#, IIS, API’s, ODBC, HTML, AIX, Episys, JQL, and applying certificates within applications.
  • Three years working as a part of a project team whose responsibilities include interfacing with gathering project requirements from multiple intra-departmental entities and building functional project plans for presentation and approval with those departments.
  • Increased awareness of business issues and how these issues affect overall project delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of critical applications and programs utilized by the credit union.
  • Proven ability to decide and implement strategies that are in line with overall technology strategy.
  • Keen understanding of security risks and evangelize the importance of following security procedures.
  • Ability to independently analyze and understand how various technical solutions interrelate and interface in order to solve business problems.
  • Project management skills in order to handle multiple problems, often times simultaneously, and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant technologies.

Physical Demands and Work Arrangement

  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of office area
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure
  • This position is able to work in hybrid or remote working arrangements.
