JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, the Head Coach is responsible for supervising, advising, and coordinating all activities related to the Water Polo program in grades seven through twelve. Exercises leadership, management and oversight to appropriately involve Assistant Coaches in the accomplishment of the School’s mission, to engender academic rigor, individual achievement and community spirit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Establish the fundamental philosophy of the Water Polo program in coordination with both the MICDS Mission statement and MICDS Athletic goals and objectives.
- Design teaching progressions, skills, and techniques, for all levels.
- Direct the overall training activities for all levels.
- Provide instruction of fundamental skills and strategies.
- Oversee the physical training of student athletes.
- Plan, schedule, organize, communicate, and run a regular organized program of practice.
- Coordinate team travel to safeguard each participant.
Implement the MICDS Athletic Policy
- Thorough knowledge of MSHSAA and ABC League regulations and policies. Implement and interpret policies and regulations consistently for staff and students.
- Actively participate in all required state, league, and department meetings.
- Maintain records and forms as required by the Director of Athletics, MSHSAA, and affiliated leagues.
- Evaluate assigned officials according to MSHSAA guidelines.
- Assist in scheduling tournaments and special sports events.
Set a tone in the Water Polo program that engenders individual achievement, community spirit and academic endeavor.
- Consults with appropriate school officials and knows student-athletes academic progress.
- Assists college-bound athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
- Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase moral and cooperation. Understands and follows the proper chain of command and refers requests and grievances through proper channels.
- With the Director of Athletics determines initial discipline, follows due process involving team when a student is to be suspended or dropped from the program. Contacts parents regarding suspension or dismissal from the team.
- Coordinates with the Athletic Training staff to complete necessary forms and adheres to school policy regarding student release from care for games and practices.
- Seeks out and directs qualified student managers and statisticians.
Provide leadership and motivation to Assistant Coaches
- Responsible for supervising, advising, coordinating, and supporting a staff of Upper School or Middle School Assistant Coaches in conjunction with the Director of Athletics and respective Heads of Divisions.
- Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation and at season's end analyze coaching effectiveness through the MICDS evaluation process.
- Conduct pre- and post-season meetings and professional opportunities for coaches.
Develop and maintain good public relations with students, parents, alumni, officials, fans, and news media.
- Conduct annual pre-season meetings with students and parents to outline expectations, policies, and procedures of the program.
- Recognize that the water polo program has a considerable component of public exposure and a significant influence on the entire school community. These inherent pressures must be kept as secondary to the objectives of good sportsmanship and lifelong learning and emotional health for students.
Responsible for water polo equipment and school property
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and property. Oversees issuance of equipment, cleaning, and re-conditioning of equipment.
- Completes end of season inventory and submits future needs projections.
- Effectively uses the charge-back policy to reduce waste and excess inventory.
- Examines field, locker rooms, equipment rooms, and offices to ensure general cleanliness and maintenance.
- Secures facilities and equipment at the end of each practice or game.
Perform other duties on behalf of MICDS that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Director of Athletics.
Reporting
The Water Polo Coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics and works in conjunctions with the Heads of Divisions.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University or College.
Master’s degree preferred.
Proven successful coaching experience.
Classroom teaching experience.
Strong communication skills. Ability to speak and write clearly and cogently.
Excellent interpersonal skills: possessing good judgment, resolve, and compassion.
Ability to represent the school in personal encounters and public settings.
Well organized and self-directed.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the Head Water Polo Coach should be in top physical form with the ability to participate in practices and physical training exercises. Exposure to outdoors weather conditions.
