Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or on-call position. Provides assistance and support for education, health and human needs, the environment and / or public safety as part of the National AmeriCorps volunteer program.

Term : Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call.

On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH CORPS :

The Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC) was created via a public-private collaboration with a robust set of partners. The Corps will address the growing needs of young people while creating career pathways to address the national shortage of mental-health professionals.

YMHC Fellows are a select sub-set of AmeriCorps members serving through one of several Michigan's AmeriCorps programs engaged in Youth Mental Health Corps activities.

Corps members serving as Youth Mental Health Corps Fellows will be trained as navigators serving young people in schools and community organizations.

YMHC Fellows will gain valuable on-the-job experience and earn credentials to advance their career via 4-H HealthCorps' School- / Community Based Organization Pathway.

4-H HealthCorps YMHC Fellows will serve youth as a part of in school programs, out-of-school programs, and community-based organizations (CBOs).

YMHC Fellows will receive intensive professional development and training on topics pertinent to this career path. In addition to robust training and development, YMHC Fellows will be provided access to certification opportunities that align with the skillset and abilities necessary for a successful career in schools and a variety of other community-based organizations.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

In addition to the YMHC training and professional development opportunities, fellows will be responsible for delivering special interest (SPIN) club programming to area schools and / or community partners within the county. These tasks will include :

  • Plan and organize 4-H SPIN (special interest) clubs with volunteers that focus on mental, emotional, and physical health topics and utilize the 4-H SPIN Club guide, planning worksheet, and record of finances
  • Recruit and engage youth new to 4-H in 4-H SPIN club programming
  • Recruit and / or support volunteers who will provide guest programming or general support to your 4-H SPIN Clubs and associated activities
  • Plan and host family engagement events to engage youth and their families in events associated with mental, emotional and physical well being.
  • Collect data and submit reports to the Site Supervisor and to the 4-H HealthCorps Program Director
  • Collect data and submit reports as appropriate related to YMHC Fellow's YMHC service activities.
  • Participate in 4-H HealthCorps, AmeriCorps, 4-H, and / or MSU Extension events as required or related to the above position description, professional development, or civic engagement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Member will be placed at one of the listed MSU Extension county offices : Cheboygan, Chippewa, Genesee, Ingham, Lapeer, Luce, Marquette, Monroe, Presque Isle, Schoolcraft, Wexford and Oakland.

The AmeriCorps Program does not provide relocation assistance, we encourage applicants to apply to a location a candidate can commute to and from easily.

Service will include minimal virtual elements but programming will primarily be in-person. Members will receive office space at the office and a computer.

The program will provide training and support on navigating needed technology however, it is important that members are comfortable with technology and / or willing to learn.

Members will be working with the community, as such they should expect to occasionally serve nights and weekends.

COMPENSATION :

Members will receive a living allowance of $18,700 (pre-tax) to be distributed bi-weekly October 1, 2024 - September 12, 2025 as well as student loan forbearance for qualified loans.

Members will serve 36-40 hours / week October 1, 2024 - September 12, 205. Upon successful completion of service, an education award in the amount of $7,395.00 will be issued.

Desired Qualifications

  • Actively and comprehensively engage in Youth Mental Health Corps training, professional development and certification processes.
  • Actively and comprehensively participate in career pathway supports provided to Youth Mental Health Corps Fellows such as career cohort convenings, office hour opportunities with Michigan's Youth Mental Health Corps leadership and access to the Michigan Community Service Commission Learning Management System.
  • Participate in development and execution of an individual career pathway plan of action.
  • Complete pre- and post-Youth Mental Health Corps Fellow career surveys.
  • Travel to attend national Youth Mental Health Corps convening in spring of 2025.
  • Serve as a mental and behavioral health liaison and resource navigator for 4-H HealthCorps' service recipients.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
