The Residential Student Care Coordinator (Case Administrator III) oversees the student support needs for the Department of Residence Education and Housing Services and is a core member of the Residential Care and Community Expectations (RCEE) team. The role partners with members of the Residence Education team, Counseling and Psychiatric Services, Office of Student Support and Accountability, Care and Intervention Team, Office of Institutional Equity, Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety and others to coordinate and facilitate student outreach and support efforts for on-campus residential students.
The Residential Student Care Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director for Residential Care and Community Expectations and is responsible for:
- leading direct support, crisis response, case management and referral services to residential students of concern and coordinating department care responses.
- administering coaching and consultation to the Residence Education team related to students of concern
- implementing evidence-based and best-practice interventions related to care management, crisis response, residence education, and college student development;
- overseeing care and case management services in partnership with REHS staff members and the Office of Student Support and Accountability, as well as with medical and mental health services in Student Health and Wellness Services, including Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS);
- providing consultation and referral services to MSU faculty and staff regarding residential students of concern;
- supervision of residential care graduate assistants including recruitment, selection, training, development, and coordination of student response;
- implementation of the university medical amnesty process including case intake, students meetings, and training staff;
- promoting unit strategic planning and implementation based on stakeholder feedback, changing environments, and student needs.
- Assessing the support needs of a student including support for students of diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA , and gender backgrounds.
Responsibilities:
Direct Care Coordination (55%)
- Leads direct follow-up, support and referral services to residential students with mental health, behavioral, or other difficulties;
- Manages services between multiple university offices, academic units, health care providers, and community resources—including REHS, OSSA, CAPS, Student Health and Wellness Services, MSU DPPS, and off-campus resources—to meet the academic, financial, housing, medical, and mental health needs of students of concern;
- Arranging follow-up/CARE meetings and in creating student success plans;
- Facilitate students’ return to campus residential environments following hospitalizations;
- Educate students regarding their rights and responsibilities as members of the university community;
- Consult students, parents, faculty, and staff in navigating university policies, procedures, and resources;
- Oversight and manage the appropriate documentation for student support and critical incident case files;
- Consult with families and off-campus partners while attending to the privacy of educational records in the context of FERPA;
- Maintains and implements advance knowledge and awareness of research, data, and federal regulations relevant to student affairs case management;
- Assess care coordination services inREHS to ensure they are accessible, responsive, and effective in serving a diverse student body, including students of color, international students, veteran students, LGBTQIA students, and students with disabilities.
General Administrative/Supervision Responsibilities (30%)
- Develop and present training for REHS staff related to Critical Incidents, Student Support services, and CARE Response.
- Oversees and manages student support services/crisis response protocols and procedures in REHS;
- Develop and train REHS team members regarding care process, trauma informed response, wellness, emergency situations, and crisis management
- Develop print, electronic materials, and website content about critical incidents/student support services for marketing and training purposes;
- Assist in development of comprehensive annual report for student support/critical incident work in REHS;
- repeatedSupervision of residential care graduate assistants to support residential care response.
- Oversees the recruitment and selection process of graduate assistants and internship/practicum students to support unit needs
- Serve as the REHS liaison to the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and attend SART meetings regularly
- Serve as the REHS liaison related to the University Medical Amnesty Process including implementation within the residential system.
- Serve on various REHS committees;
- Contribute to the daily functioning of REHS through support of its administrative, on-call, and crisis management responsibilities;
- Maintain compliance with reporting requirements under Title IX, the Clery Act, and other applicable regulations;

Residential Student Conduct Responsibilities (10%)
- Support all areas of the Residential Care and Community Expectations team including case processing and serving as a trained as a conduct meeting officer.
- Assist hall staff with responding to communities in distress (for example, bias incidents)
- Promotes civility and student accountability.
- Maintains confidential student conduct records in accordance to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Michigan State University Record Management Services Office
- Manages archive and purge processes of residential conduct records in compliance with university standards.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completion of a four-year college degree program in business, psychology, social work, criminal justice or in a related field; three to five years of relevant working experience in policy enforcement, case management, report writing, and working with partnering agencies or departments; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, college student personnel, higher education administration, or related field;
- Experience working with college students and having knowledge of issues impacting college students, student development theory, and its application to behavioral and medical/mental-health issues;
- Experience in crisis intervention and response and care management procedures, preferably in a higher education setting;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a dynamic, diverse, and engaged student population, both individually and in groups. Experience working with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences.
- Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, and cloud-based software.
- Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments and multiple social identities.
- Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including [communities of color], in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
- An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
