Judicial Information Services (JIS) is the IT arm of the Michigan Supreme Court. The Database Administrator is responsible for the performance, integrity, and security of a database, including the planning and development of the database as well as troubleshooting any issues on behalf of the users and software developers. Functions independently with little or no supervision and may serve as a team leader on one or more projects and/or mentor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Architect, install, troubleshoot, administer and optimize database environments;
- Architect, install, troubleshoot, administer backup and recovery of databases including High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR);
- Performs ongoing tuning of the database instances;
- Implements and enforces security for SQL databases;
- Provides mentoring to application development teams on database design and support;
- Enforces and maintains database constraints to ensure integrity of the database;
- Administers all database objects, including tables, clusters, indexes, views, sequences, packages and procedures
- Evaluates, selects and applies proven techniques, procedures and criteria, in making enhancements and modifications to database environments;
- Organizes the tracking of database modifications via standard change management practices;
- Participates or leads specialized projects with other functional groups as required;
- Participates or leads in short and long term database planning;
- Build, manage and maintain Qlik Replicate environment pipelines and tasks.
- Evaluate and recommend new and emerging database standards;
- Maintain and expand professional and technical knowledge through research, training and empirical testing;
- Serve as a technical advisor and liaison within the Court, with other courts, community groups, and/or governmental agencies;
- Supports service desk when required to resolve customer issues
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (IF NECESSARY) Be available 24x7x365 to respond to database emergencies.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems or college level coursework and six years related experience.
EXPERIENCE
Five years of related and progressively responsible experience in database administration and design.
KNOWLEDGE
- Database Administration and design of Microsoft SQL clustered database environments;
- Knowledge of Qlik Replicate
- Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools for both database and operating systems and make the necessary adjustments;
- Backups, restores and recovery models;
- High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MSSQL and Oracle SQL Servers;
- Implementing operational automation using scripts;
- Indexes, index management, and statistics;
- Windows server, including Active Directory and proper disk configurations;
- Data definitions, processes/procedures, system design, SQL coding;

- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
- Facilitate work meetings, elicit and solicit information, and absorb the information being communicated; facilitate a shared understanding of the problem, possible solutions, and scope of the project in its entirety; facilitate solutions to technical challenges among multiple teams when they involve negotiation between multiple business and technical stakeholders;
- Evaluate multiple options before facilitating the solution to a problem;
- Apply critical thinking skills to determine the appropriateness of requests, with periodic reviews of business procedures to clarify or change a business process. Use the knowledge gained in the daily operational procedures as input to business process and procedure documentation;
- Prioritize across multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;
- Work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Working conditions are normal for an office environment;
- Lift and transport materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 45 pounds.
WORK LOCATION: Official work-site location is the Hall of Justice, Lansing, Michigan. Remote work may be available in accordance with the MSC/SCAO Remote Work Policy.
