EDUCATION:   

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred,
  • Teacher Certification


EXPERIENCE:    

  • Three to five years of successful teaching or related experience
  • Previous experience in curriculum and instruction development preferred 

Position Function/Purpose

To promote the quality of curriculum, instruction and professional development in the assigned content area. The specialist will collaborate with the principals, content directors, district instructional coaches, and teachers to provide training using research-based instructional approaches, and interventions to meet district/campus needs based upon the analysis of student achievement data.

Essential Functions

Instructional Management

1.       Assist teachers, instructional directors and principals with the improvement of instruction through such activities as presentation of model lessons, designing, selection and distributing of instructional materials, and assistance with planning instruction.

2.       Assist with the review and implementation of the district’s instructional programs.

3.       Provide feedback to instructional directors regarding textbooks, software, supplementary and other curricular materials for the assigned content area.

4.       Plan and/or coordinate additional instructional student activities such as special programs, projects, student and parent retreats and competition/exhibits at the campus and district level.

5.       Spend a Minimum of 70% of instructional day in classrooms and in direct contact with teachers either modeling, coaching or conferencing.


Media Management

1.       Plan long-range goals of the Student Center with faculty, administration and students.

2.       Plan the budget with the administration, school-based councils, and/or advisory committees, based on the needs and objectives of the Student Center program.

3.       Administer the budget according to the goals and objectives of the program.

4.       Meet periodically with the principal to evaluate and discuss short-range goals and accomplishments for improving the Student Center.

6.       Develop plans for maintaining a technologically current facility and program.

7.       Organize, classify, and catalog library materials, following nationally recognized professional standards.

8.       Solicit suggestions from and communicate with faculty and students about services, materials, programs, and facilities.

9.       Evaluate programs, services, facilities and materials informally and formally on a continuous basis identifying strengths and weaknesses.

10.    Organize and maintain the student center as a functional, attractive, safe and orderly environment for optimal use by students and faculty.

11.    Publicize the student center programs, services, and materials.

 

Media Services

1.       Maintain flexible use of the student center by individuals, small groups, and large groups for research, browsing, recreational reading, and/or listening (when appropriate).

2.       Provide training to staff in use of new materials, technology, and equipment, as appropriate.
Support classroom teachers as a consultant in the development of instructional units, activities, and curriculum with print and nonprint materials.

3.       Assist faculty in the selection of materials to supplement classroom instruction.

4.       Establish positive rapport with staff and students.

5.       Make the student center and its resources accessible to students and faculty.

6.        Provide orientation for new faculty and students.

7.       Facilitate the circulation of materials among schools in the district or with other agencies, as appropriate.

8.       Make the student center and its services available to parents and other community members.

 

Personnel Management:

1.       Work under the supervision of the building principal to provide orientation to new instructional staff and to substitute teachers.

2.       Assist in the recruitment and interview process for teachers as requested by the division of Human Resource Services or the building principal.

 

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

1.       Work under the supervision of the building principal to prepare and submit budget recommendations related to curriculum materials, inventory and equipment needs.

2.       Assist the building principal in coordinating facility needs for staff development, special student programs and parent meetings.

3.       Work with instructional directors to plan for broad-based teacher and community involvement in curriculum development projects and seeking outside funding and grants.

4.       Work with grant writer, through the instructional directors, to seek outside funding and grants as requested.

 

Professional Growth and Development

1.       Work under the supervision of the building principal to prepare and submit budget recommendations related to curriculum materials, inventory and equipment needs programs and parent meetings.

2.       Follow the schools and district’s policies and procedures.

3.       Promote compliance with the copyright law.

4.       Handle concerns of others in a positive and professional manner in order to protect user’s rights and privacy and confidentiality.

5.       Attend appropriate professional activities and meetings.

6.       Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency code of ethics.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1.       Knowledge of integrated learning systems software

2.       Knowledge of special populations, i.e., special education, LEP

3.       Current in knowledge of technological trends, particularly as applied to classroom.

4.       Knowledge of integrated learning systems software.

5.       Knowledge of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

6.       Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, communications software, etc.

7.       Advanced knowledge of research-based practices related to the assigned content area

8.       Knowledge of the school improvement process.

9.       Knowledge of classroom management techniques.

10.    Interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).

11.    Effective organizational skills.

12.    Training in curriculum development.

13.    Effective presenter of professional development for staff, community and parents.

WORKING CONDITIONS

 The environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.  Occasionally required to travel to facilities within the district.  May be required to work after school and weekends.
