The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to; performing cleaning and sterilizing duties of supplies and equipment and prepares them for use by the Hospital staff. Prepares case cart system for the Operating Room. Other functions that may be assigned.
Responsibilities
(50%)* Stock c ase carts, supplies and equipment. Pulls OR cases following requisitions form, delivers carts to OR in timely manner, restocks OB case carts, delivers sterilized supplies to nursing units.
(30%)* Decontamination of instruments and equipment. Empties soiled OR and OB case carts in timely manner. Disposes of linen and trash in proper receptacles. Decontaminates instruments according to established procedures. Decontaminates case carts via the steam room according to established procedures. Cleans and refurbishes equipment according to established procedures.
(20%)* Performs quality assurance tests of sterilizers. Performs and charts Bowie Dick Test on vacuum steam sterilizers. Performs and charts biological tests on OR gravity sterilizers. Performs and charts biological tests on vacuum steam sterilizers. Performs diagnostic test and records results in Steris sterilizers.
Certifications and Licensures
BLS: Basic Life Support
Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer
SPD CERT: Cert Sterile Process Tech
Equivalent Experience: Certified in Sterile Processing (SPD Cert) preferred. If not certified, must complete certification within twenty-four months and maintain.

Assigns expiration dates to items as required and labels all items correctly and in a clear manner.
Documents load contents, records biological and chemical test results load all sterilizers according to established procedures, verifies the sterilizer has functioned properly by recording information in log book, and uses proper safety techniques when loading and unloading the sterilizers.
Is aware of the correct steps to take when there is a wet pack, positive biological, failed bowie-dick, and/or the sterilizer cycle aborts.
Follows all policies and procedures for the following: Cleans sterilizer chambers. Maintains outside surfaces of sterilizers. Sonic washer cleaned at end of shift Cleans loading carts. Cleans carts according to assignment.
Supply ordering- Orders supplies from storeroom and pharmacy to meet established par levels and usage. Orders linen from laundry. Assists supervisor with special orders as needed.
Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Maintains the standards of the infection prevention and control policies.
Implements and maintains isolation techniques per policy.
Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Medical terminology course or equivalent experience acquired through a clinical setting required.
Ability to pass medical terminology test.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Must follow MyMichigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required. MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
