Position Title: Assistant Preparator
Job: Temporary Part-time, Hourly**
Supervisor: Chief Preparator
General Purpose: To assist the Photography Coordinator and Collection Photographer with all manner of art handling duties related to the photography of the permanent collection and exhibitions. This is a temporary grant-funded position for 20 hours per week, for 24 months.
Education/Experience Requirements: Knowledge of handling artwork and experience in handling works on paper required. Experience with TMS or cultural collections software a plus, and museum or gallery experience preferred.
License or Certification Requirements: None
Essential Job Functions:
- Assists the Collection Photographer and Photography Coordinator during photography sessions, which will take place, on average, two to three days per week. Duties include, but are not limited to, taking direction from the photographer and coordinator to place a variety of two and three-dimensional works on various photography set-ups and adjusting the works, per the photographer’s direction.
- Works closely with the Photography Coordinator to physically move objects from storage areas and gallery spaces to designated studio areas, and return the works after photography sessions.
- Must be able to handle delicate objects.
- Track and log object location changes.
- Coordinates with members of the Conservation, Registration, and Art Preparator teams to locate works of art and assess them for safe handling and movement.
Physical Requirements: Ability to carefully handle delicate and fragile objects a must, as well as lift, move, and place heavy objects with care and grace. Ability to lift 50 pounds, sit, stand, and climb ladders.
Temperament: Excellent interpersonal skills, systematic, meticulous, patient, self-starter and works well under pressure. Manages time efficiently, can analyze and solve problems both independently and collaboratively. Ability to be flexible and embrace changes within this position due to departmental priorities. Ability to work with a wide variety of people to achieve the goals of the Museum.
Additional duties, time permitting, may include assisting the art preparation team with duties related to the following:
- Exhibition installation, shipping and receiving works of art, construction, packing, and museum maintenance.
