POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Lighting Director is responsible for the leadership and administration of the lighting department and associated personnel. They will evaluate, budget, and prepare the lighting designs for all Milwaukee Rep productions and events. The Lighting Director is part of a collaborative team that includes directors, designers, technicians, stage managers and the other production area heads. The primary role of the Lighting & Video Director at the Milwaukee Rep is to serve as a liaison between the lighting designers, the artistic staff, the crew members, and all other production areas.


Other major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Prepare, budget and coordinate installation of all lighting designs in the Quadracci Powerhouse, Stiemke Studio Theater, and Stackner Cabaret. 
  • Coordinate with Resident Crew in the QPH, STM, and STK to facilitate quick and efficient changeovers from one production to the next
  • Communicate all artistic needs from lighting designers to other production departments 
  • Collaborate on SFX needs for productions in conjunction with other departments
  • Purchase and maintain inventories for all lighting equipment expendables 
  • Collaborate with designers to find solutions for production design challenges and ensure the feasibility of their design 
  • Prepare and maintain lighting needs for rehearsal halls 
  • Prep lighting equipment, coordinate lighting installation and supervise electrics crew for A Christmas Carol at the Pabst Theater. 
  • Maintain all lighting documentation for all three theatres
  • Work with the Director of Production to create the lighting budgets for future seasons
  • Facilitate shipping and receiving of lighting and video equipment rental/repair 
  • Manage and track all lighting department budget lines
  • Ensure that productions adhere to all Equity rules regarding atmospherics
  • Stay current in all lighting technologies, techniques, and practices
  • Participate in development, education, and outreach events as time permits
  • Attend technical rehearsals, previews, and production meetings as needed 
  • Contribute to the training of Emerging Professional Residents
  • Actively participate in creating a clean, safe, and healthy work environment. 
  • Other duties as assigned

SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time, exempt, seasonal position that typically runs August to June with exact dates depending on season calendar. For the 2022/23 season, the planned dates of employment are July 25th, 2022 to June 4th, 2023. Start date is negotiable for the right candidate.

Requirements

Technical Knowledge and Experience: Qualified candidates will have a work history that demonstrates their ability to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities required of the position including the ability to generate, read and interpret working technical drawings, along with the following: 

  • Three (3) years experience with lighting design or electrics 
  • Two (2) years in leadership capacity, with proven leadership ability
  • Ability to generate and edit drawings in Vectorworks and create paperwork using Lightwright
  • College degree preferred but not required

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must communicate well with a diverse group of colleagues; all while exhibiting grace and good humor under pressure
  • Capacity to solve problems and engage in creative thinking about challenges individually and in a group environment, while being able to accept and incorporate feedback
  • Knowledge of the artistic process and excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomacy skills
  • Understanding of historical and institutional racism in the American theatre and/or a willingness to commit to learning and to the mission, vision, and values of the theater in areas of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion efforts both in the workplace and in our community
  • Well-developed communication, organization, and research skills

Additional Requirements:  

  • Available to work nights and weekends as required 
  • Physical requirements include: ability to lift 30 pounds unassisted, climb stairs, color/close vision, discern fine detail, and on occasion bending, lifting, standing, and brisk walking
  • Ability to pass a background check in accordance with state and/or federal laws
