This position serves our partners at Minnesota’s largest state agency, the Department of Human Services (DHS). The MNIT DHS team supports complex and varied technical needs, including systems that provide health care coverage, deliver child protection and welfare services, and provide support for Minnesotans with special needs including mental illness, chemical dependencies, and physical or developmental disabilities.

As a Senior Database Administrator, you will provide technical leadership in defining, establishing, and supporting the infrastructure for the Mainframe Systems Development Division (MSDD) Applications needs. This is a broad area of responsibility covering multiple platforms and serving a broad variety of users. You will provide technical expertise and advanced knowledge surrounding the technical infrastructure, architecture, and security of the systems that the division supports, the networks and platforms that those systems reside in, the databases of those systems, the database and application servers that host those systems, and how those systems interface with each other, and is called on to assist with crisis management.

This position is currently eligible for full-time telework:

  • Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in St. Paul, Minnesota.
  • Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must clearly demonstrate all of the following qualifications in their resume:

Position requires a minimum of five (5) years of IT related experience in database design and management.

Experience must include:

  • Use of Software AG products such as NATURAL/ADABAS/PREDICT.
  • Use of IBM utilities and MVS/TSO for placement of DASD and application fixes.
  • Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding amongst all parties (both technical and non-technical).
  • Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.

A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of data processing hardware and software concepts.
  • Extensive knowledge of the relationships of operating system to database management systems and to application software.
  • Extensive knowledge of job control language, file structures, and an online environment.
  • Skill and ability to analyze and resolve hardware and software problems and must be knowledgeable of all aspects of the operating system environment and be aware of operations scheduling, data set placement, and other conditions which affect the performance and service capability of the entire system.
  • Strong experience with system software internals sufficient to troubleshoot problems, identify faulty components, and predict how third party products may disrupt or degrade existing software.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and lead major DBA projects and to provide work direction/guidance to others.
