POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Camp Site Director/Summer Day Camp Site Director, this position assists in all aspects of the said program, including acting as Site Director in his/her absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs regular duties of assigned position (preschool teacher/camp counselor) when Site Director is present.
  2. Facilitates purposeful and engaging activities designed to nurture the potential of youth. 
  3. Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches to academic and social development of youth.
  4. Ensure the safety and engagement of children in assigned group or area.  
  5. Assists Site Director in the following areas:
  • recruitment, selection, and supervision of staff.
  • maintaining guidelines and activity plans to be implemented by personnel.
  • managing all equipment and supplies associated with the program. 
  • maintaining clean facility, building and grounds, and reporting any deficiencies to supervisor immediately.
  • maintaining the Y’s Child Abuse Prevention standards and safety guidelines, including non-use of cell phone during work shift, no off-duty babysitting, and ensuring that children are always appropriately supervised. Reports violations of these standards and guidelines to supervisor immediately.
  • implementing the Y’s Age-Appropriate Curriculum.
  • seeking various avenues to market program including community events, school events, PTO meetings, relationships with area businesses, and all other approved/related avenues.
  • maintaining accurate records, including attendance, staff files, USDA, and all other related program records.

6. In the absence of the Site Director, the Assistant Director/Director Designee is responsible for: 

  • managing the childcare program at their designated site in accordance with the Y’s philosophy.
  • assuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as they relate to program areas, including ADA accommodations where appropriate. 
  • maintaining the Y’s Child Abuse Prevention standards and safety guidelines, including non-use of cell phone during work shift, no off-duty babysitting, and ensuring that children are always appropriately supervised. Reports violations of these standards and guidelines to supervisor immediately.
  • ensuring that YMCA program standards are met, and safety procedures are followed.
  • ensuring the safety and engagement of children at the YMCA program site. 
  • responding to parent concerns including holding a parent meeting when deemed necessary.

7. Organizes or participates in Y activities, such as committees, special events, and fundraising.

8. Drives YMCA vehicles to ensure the program operates when driver(s) are out during a program day.

9. Assists with childcare programs at other YMCA locations as requested. Completes and submits mileage reimbursement form for temporary assignment at other locations to supervisor. 

10. Abides by and follows the Y’s Dress Code and models appropriate behavior expected of YMCA Childcare Services team members.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. At least 21 years of age; Associate’s Degree or higher in associated field; 2 years of experience in a licensed childcare facility.
  2. Fulfills MDHS’s Director Designee requirements. 
  3. Infant/Child CPR/First Aid/AED certification is required within 30 days and must remain current throughout employment.
  4. Required training within 30 Days: Y-USA Online Trainings: The Y & Your New Employee Orientation. Required training within 60 Days: Y-USA Online Trainings: The Y’s Way to Service & Engagement, Orientation to Healthy Living.  

Required trainings within 90 Days: Y-USA Online Trainings: Introduction to The Y’s Cause and Culture, Foundations of Listen First, Orientation to Diversity, Inclusion & Global; MSDH Trainings: Health & Safety Regulation, Playground Regulation, Camp Regulation, Director’s Orientation 1 & 2, Childcare Regulations 1 & 2.

5. Must obtain a minimum of 15 hours of Continuing Education Units as required by the Mississippi Department of Health yearly.

6. Possess the ability to create and work in a Christian environment so that each camper has the opportunity for spiritual growth and to further the mission and values of the YMCA (Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.)

7. Begin training process to obtain an appropriate CDL Bus license with endorsements to transport children to and from program activities or evacuation locations within the first 2 months of employment. Obtains appropriate CDL Bus license within first 9 months of employment. Maintains CDL license and driving record that meets YMCA Insurance guidelines and requirements on an annual basis.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
