This is responsible, professional auditing work in auditing records of business firms for taxation purposes.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience, and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in accounting or business administration and a minimum of one year responsible accounting and auditing experience, preferably in local government; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid driver's license from state or residence.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Good knowledge of common business practices relating to financial record keeping; good knowledge of the principles and practices of general accounting; good knowledge of automated accounting systems; ability to interpret and explain legal requirements, rules, regulations and procedures; ability to ascertain facts by checking accounting records, books and reports and by personal contact and observation; ability to prepare concise and comprehensive reports of fiscal examination and transactions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, other employees and the general public.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Conducts complex field audits of various business establishments to determine whether gross receipts of the business, licensing information and taxes due, have been properly reported; schedules interviews with business owners and managers to explain and discuss audit requirements; reviews business accounting systems with comptrollers, chief accountants and office managers to determine methods for extracting sales and tax information; devises audit work paper formats and records information extracted from accounting records, such as basic documents, journals, ledgers and financial statements; analyzes sales and other business transactions and categorizes according to taxable or exempt status; summarizes data, computes measures of tax due, and prepares a tax bill or credit statement; discusses results of tax audit with business owners or representatives; performs audits of monthly tax returns; reviews returns for preparation, format, legality of deductions and accuracy of computations of tax; provides assistance to taxpayers and answers questions concerning tax or license problems; conducts automotive bills of sale audits; conducts Alabama Department of Revenue audit conversions; resolves tax account discrepancies due to erroneous postings or calculations; conducts refund request processing; maintains alcoholic beverage database; assists taxpayers in the completion of tax returns; conducts special analysis of accounts with unusual postings and maintenance; provides technical assistance to examiners and investigators; answers correspondence; performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for examining complex accounting and related records of business firms to determine tax liability based on volume of sales or rentals. Work requires considerable tact in dealing with the public and involves interpreting laws and regulations relating to the administration and enforcement of tax and license provisions. General direction is received from the Revenue Officer.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.
The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A "Practice Test Seminar" is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
