Job Description
- Manage the design, development and implementation of molds / tooling required to support the development of new products and existing product capacity expansion.
- Support New Product development and Supply Chain Management in working with suppliers to procure required mold tooling to support new and existing production requirements and investigate & implement industry best practices in mold design / construction and validation.
- Work with Sanford engineering to support product design changes for all products throughout the facility. This would include modification of solid models and creating/modification of all associated drawings.
- Lead/manage multiple projects to support quality improvements and cost reductions of existing products utilizing a working knowledge of various thermoplastic resins, manufacturing techniques and engineering practices.
- Review and critique submitted mold vendor design proposals and assures functional mold performance and adherence to established mold construction standards.
- Adhere to predetermined budgets and timing schedules, writes reports as needed, and communicates orally and in writing as needed.
- Coordinate tooling trials, directs inspection layouts and tool modifications as required to achieve molded production part
qualification and manufacturing approval of new tools as assigned. - Assist in the identification, qualification, and continued development of mold tooling vendors to assure coverage of all tooling repair contingencies.
- Study blueprints of product and die or mold, and computes
specifications. - Tracking and development of preventive maintenance system for injection molding tools. This includes system set up, shot tracking, record keeping, scheduling of maintenance, reviewing tool condition, assigning repair and maintenance work to internal and external tooling vendors.
- Develop qualified vendors to handle all tooling repair contingencies, respond to requests for engineering changes, and coordinate tool trials and qualifications for new tools assigned.
- Generate, modify and trouble-shoot machine and process programs. Support and provide technical knowledge and skills to the molding team.
- Generate accurate equipment set-up and operating instructions.
- Initiate appropriation requests for major projects. Support development of mold capacity and justify budget plans for expense and capital spending.
- Evaluate and investigate design change requests from internal/external sources, taking action and making changes which will improve product quality, reliability, manufacturability and cost.
- Compile, prepare and present data for project updates and technical presentations to staff and/or management.
- Direct/coach tooling, engineering and production associates to guide product/process and tooling improvement efforts to meet project goals.
- Develop and implement procedures and training
- Support and participate in Lean initiatives
Qualifications
- B S degree in engineering preferred
- 6 years of tooling and product development experience. Knowledge and working understanding of tool construction and corrective / repair recommendations. Extensive experience in the design and development of high cavitation thermo plastic injection molds.
- Experience in development, validation, and process optimization of multiple tools / suppliers for single components Knowledge of most thermoplastic engineered grade resins, injection molding machines and all auxiliary support equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of tooling prints, part prints, inspection procedures and SPC analysis.
- Demonstrate troubleshooting and problem solving solutions through the use of DOE, 8-D and Six Sigma disciplines/methodologies.
- Sigmasoft / Mold Flow experience preferred
- RJG Master Molder / Scientific injection molding discipline a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for dealing with all levels of staff, customers, suppliers, and operations.
- Hands on experience with Solidworks and/or Creo or other CAD/CAM software, MS Office.
- Must possess a business orientation and interactive skills to support the manufacturing team and function as a business partner.
- Demonstrated success handling multiple priorities and working in a fast paced environment
- Experience with lean manufacturing and change management preferred.
