Job Summary
Plans, organizes, develops and directs the overall operations of the Therapeutic Recreation Department in accordance with current Federal, State and Local standards, guidelines and regulations. Ensures the ongoing program of activities meets the interests and the physical, mental and psychosocial well-being needs of each resident in accordance with the comprehensive assessment.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Ensures the Therapeutic Recreation program provides services suited to the needs, abilities and interests of residents as mandated by accrediting agencies.
- Ensures activities are provided in individual and group settings for both ambulatory and non-ambulatory residents.
- Ensures the program provides a variety of activities, both in and out of the facility. Activities include but are not limited to exercise, social, literary, educational, community, spiritual, arts and crafts, sensory level programs, and other activities that promote resident independence.
- Ensures scheduling, staffing and work assignments promote the smooth and efficient delivery of patient care. Supervises staff and volunteers.
- Ensures activities, policies and procedures are current and in compliance with internal and external standards or regulations related to the function or department.
- In partnership with leadership and Human Resources, makes decisions or recommendations related to performance management, hiring, transfers, corrective actions, terminations, etc. Resolves staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with HR.
- Trains, orients and evaluates volunteers, staff and/or students.
- Maintains and submits monthly calendars of activities. Distributes calendars to staff, residents and volunteers.
- Ensures assessments and care plans are completed by all TR staff timely. The assessment process includes the resident use of free time, preadmission hobbies, interests, lifestyle, ability and desire to participate in structured individual or group activities. Identifies ways to enhance resident skills on the basis of current abilities, with focus on social, emotional, physical and physical domains, and physician’s recommendations, including identified limitations and/or precautions.
- Incorporates the Therapeutic Recreation plan into the Resident Care plan.
- Reviews resident participation in programs and revises care plan at least quarterly or as needed.
- Ensures the selection of safe and adequate space, equipment and supplies for the department’s programs.
- Prepares and manages the financial plan for recreational services.
- Provides reports on TR programs and events as needed. Uses statistical information and pertinent data.
- Participates in the organizational Quality Assurance program.
- Objectively and systematically monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of resident activities program to meet the needs, abilities and interests of residents.
- Performs regularly scheduled chart audits to ensure areas of concern are being addressed.
- Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement programs.
- Participates in Resident Council meetings.

Education/Experience Requirements
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in recreation with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited institution.
- Experience working with people with disabilities in a Long Term Care or Rehab setting, preferably in geriatrics.
- Minimum 7 years experience in Therapeutic Recreation.
- Minimum 4 years of leadership or management experience.
- Ability to develop, document and maintain a scheduled activities program.
