Montana Specialty Mills is a joint venture between Columbia Grain International, a leading worldwide grain and pulse supplier based in Portland, Oregon, and Evans Grain based in Burley, Idaho.
Our new, state-of-the-art crush plant and refinery represents a firm investment in Montana agriculture. Located along the Missouri River in Great Falls, this facility is focused on processing specialty oilseeds. Our Great Falls plant has the capability to load product into railcars, bulk trucks, totes and drums. This facility is designed to process identity-preserved crops, and we offer a wide variety of products and toll processing services.
Position Description
The Lab Technician fills an essential role in MSM food safety and quality programs. Through the calibration of lab equipment, analyzing and inspecting product, the Lab Technician will ensure products meet company and customer quality specifications.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze samples to ensure they meet product specifications.
- Keep the lab stocked with necessary supplies, adhering to Quality Standard Policy.
- Maintain accurate and organized records.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Communicate and document the QA results.
- Perform equipment checks and minor troubleshooting to ensure equipment is in proper working order.
- Comply with all applicable company and plant specific policies and procedures.
- Maintain ongoing company compliance with all applicable regulations and 3rd party auditor requirements.
- Conduct sensory analysis.
- Create CofAs for outgoing oil shipments accurately. Holding shipments that do not meet quality standards.
- Immediately report any quality issue or concerns.
- Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Position-Specific Skills
- Two years’ experience in the QA/QC, Laboratory or Food Production field degree prefer.
- Experience in food processing plant is a plus.
- Understanding and familiarity with the operation of lab and test equipment used in the MSM plant.
- The desire and ability to cooperate with other company and plant departments.
- High level of organizational skills, including written and verbal communication and commitment to company goals
- Demonstrated commitment to operate the facility in a clean, safer manner and comply with all regulatory requirements.
- Can Do attitude to accomplish the roles’ responsibilities
- Be able to work extended hours in addition to evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary to keep the plant running.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- High level organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail
- Multi-task in a fast-paced work environment with ability to have fun
Leadership Skills Required
- Responsible for upholding the principles of the company’s food safety certification program.
- Responsible for immediately reporting any safety, food quality or plant security issues to management for appropriate action.
Technical Skills Preferred but willing to train
- GMP training and understanding of regulations
- HACCP Training
- In depth knowledge of the SQF Audit process
- Global Food Safety Initiative Certification
- Basic knowledge of MSDS
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Word & PowerPoint)
- Familiarity with Non-GMO project, food chain ID, and QAI certifications.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be exposed to extreme heat, moving mechanical parts, wet and/or humid conditions, heights, electrical shock, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, all weather conditions, vibrations and loud noise. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, but not excessive (ear protection is available, but not required by OSHA).
