We are seeking an aqueous analytical chemist who will manage a research and teaching laboratory focused on waters, soils, plant materials, organism tissues, and sediments. Applications from candidates with an MS or PhD are encouraged, and a combination of two part-time people may be selected to cover the duties described here.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operating and maintaining instrumentation, including inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, ion chromatography, flow-injection analysis, and combustion methods for total and dissolved carbon and nitrogen;
  • Developing and documenting analytical and lab user protocols;
  • Data development, quality assurance, and communicating results to end users and Lab Director;
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate students with limited analytical or chemistry background, through participation in an Environmental Analysis class, defined independent study projects for research credit, or work on shared data sets;
  • Evaluating and supporting work of other lab users including graduate students, post-docs, and research staff;
  • Contributing to grant proposals to fund instrumentation and salary;
  • Managing analysis requests with proper invoicing, effective workflow, and quality control documentation;
  • Tracking and reporting operations costs (invoiced totals, total expenses, labor costs, expendable costs, instrument repairs, etc.);
  • Maintaining the processes and documentation required for lab safety and waste disposal.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • MS or PhD in analytical chemistry, biogeochemistry, hydrology, or a related field,
  • Comprehensive experience with instrumentation and rigorous data development and management.
  • Experience with teaching analytical chemistry or related topics.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis and mastery of standard instrumentation including inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, ion chromatography, flow-injection analysis, and other routine analytical techniques.
  • Interest and experience in developing computer code for efficient automated lab work flows for QA/QC and data delivery to customers.
  • Research experience in biogeochemistry and analysis of inorganic constituents in natural and managed soil and water systems.
  • Experience with quality control-quality assurance programs and documentation of standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability and/or interest in teaching and interaction with graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Ability and interest in development and application of novel analytical techniques.

The Successful Candidate Will
  • Contribute to defining the mission and impact of the Environmental Analysis Laboratory;
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Work cooperatively with an interdisciplinary group of environmental science faculty and students to positively contribute to research and teaching programs.
