A vacancy exists for a
Reading Specialist to work within the
Office of Student Services at the
Montgomery County Intermediate Unit! The Reading Specialist provides remedial instruction and interventions in the area of literacy to students ages 13 to 21 through a comprehensive program of identification, assessment, prescription, and instruction to students at the Southeast Youth Development Center. The MCIU's Southeast Youth Development Center is located at SCI Phoenix (1200 Mokychic Rd. Collegeville, PA 19426).
Qualifications:
- Valid PA Certification as a Reading Specialist required
- Additional Secondary Certification preferred
- Wilson Certified preferred
- Ability to work as a member of a team. Must be courteous and able to deal effectively and cooperatively with people
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions, ability to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision
- Ability to operate office equipment, use computer technology efficiently, and be a proficient typist
- Current Police, Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint clearances required
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide remedial instruction and research-based interventions to individuals and in small groups that address needs derived from assessments and data.
- Prepare lesson plans based upon students’ instructional needs/deficits
- Monitor student progress towards student’s established goals.
- Execute instruction that engages students in activities aligned to their instructional goals, utilize informal assessments, and maintain student records including anecdotal notes of students’ progress relative to their instructional needs and performance.
- Communicate regularly with regular and special education teachers, administrators and parents/guardians regarding students’ progress in literacy and recommend supports inside and outside of the classroom to support student’s academic development.
- Contribute to the development of IEPs and provide input for the creation of IEPs and psycho-educational evaluations.
- Provide professional development and support to teachers in accordance with specially designed instruction (SDI) recommendations for students.
- Attend professional development activities as requested
- Administer required formal assessments to assess the students' academic levels and align research-based intervention programs.
- Provide classroom management strategies based on principles of child development
- Work effectively and professionally with all school and facility staff
- Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation in a timely fashion.
- Assume additional duties as assigned by program supervisor, Assistant Director, or the Director

Work Schedule:
7.5 hours/day, 11 months (194 days/year)
2024 - 2025 Salary:
Bachelor’s, Step 1: $52,572/year
Master’s, Step 1: $63,582/year
*Placement on salary schedule based on experience and/or education beyond the Master’s Degree.
