SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the director of the Department of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management (DSSEM), assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment at designated facilities. Develops proper professional relationships with staff and offices at the designated facility, approaches and professionally greets visitors on the campus or in the building to determine their business and to assist with locating the office they seek. Consistently monitors and patrols the building and grounds to ensure the safety and security of the staff and authorized visitors. Provides a security presence at various school system-related events and activities at central office sites. Maintains and uses a portable radio, has knowledge of the fire evacuation alarm system, the MCPS emergency preparedness procedures, and other safety and security equipment or practices. Reports safety and security concerns to DSSEM and necessary cleaning or repair orders to the building service manager. Maintains appropriate records related to the security monitoring activities. Responds to safety and security threats at various school system-related events and activities, and reacts appropriately in emergency and high stress situations. Escalates emergency situations to law enforcement as needed. Facility Security Assistants may be assigned to provide coverage at various Central office facilities on a rotational basis.
CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver's license or equivalent. First Aid and CPR certification is required within six months of accepting this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Knowledge and/or the ability to learn the designated facility and the organizational relationships of the various offices within the building. Knowledge of MCPS security practices, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of standard investigative procedures. Ability to learn and understand how to operate and properly monitor surveillance and alarm systems. Ability to utilize the Visitor Management System (VMS) software to monitor and track visitors during the day at the facility. Ability to work with a diverse community and individuals in difficult or stressful situations and/or deal with sensitive scenarios or suspicious activity in the facility or on the grounds. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Ability to acquire knowledge of and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree with course work in criminal law, human relations, or related field is preferred. Experience working with people in group settings and overseeing the welfare of others. Two to five years of experience conducting investigations following established investigative protocols/procedures. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
