Paraeducator Specialist - Special Education Resource/Life Essentials
Coordinates activities or performs specialized duties to assist in providing instruction to and supervision of students in a variety of instructional and non-instructional programs. Performs supervision of students in the building and on school grounds during the school day.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
If you do not have the minimum college credits for this position, you may take the ParaPro (ETS) Assessment. This assessment covers basic knowledge in math, reading, and writing. 1. High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 72 college quarter credits from a nationally accredited institution/pass ETS test required.
2. Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
3. Must be accurate and efficient at completing tasks on time without constant/direct supervision.
4. Ability to relate in a positive manner with students, parents, and staff/teachers, supervisory staff.
5. Must be able to work effectively with small groups or individual students under the supervision of certificated staff.
6. Ability to accurately keep records.
7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find acceptable.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Meet performance expectations as outlined in MLSD #161 Classified Employee Performance Evaluation.
2. Always punctual. If absences are required, inform the supervisor early enough so that normal workflow is not interrupted.
3. Well-groomed and has a neat and clean appearance. Dresses appropriately for job assignments.
4. Ability to perform custodial care activities such as lifting and feeding students and helping them with such hygiene needs like toileting and grooming; diapering will be necessary.
5. Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
6. Promptly and accurately follows specific instructions, and performs duties with a positive attitude.
7. Follows a duty schedule as assigned.
8. Follows prescribed behavior plans as assigned.
9. Applies appropriate discipline according to district procedures and behavior plans.
10. Works independently and solves problems with minimal supervision.
11. Works well with special needs children individually or in small groups to communicate the appropriate learning objectives as outlined in their individualized educational program (IEP) under the supervision of certified staff.
12. Builds a positive relationship with special needs students.
13. Encourages special needs students to develop positive relationships with their peers.
14. Willing to receive Non-violent Crisis Intervention and Non-violent Restraint training.
15. Effectively intervenes and controls students when they are out of control (e.g. fighting, acting out, having tantrums, etc.) by using the appropriate restraining methods approved by the district.
16. Receives training to gain an understanding of specific disabilities.
17. Responsibly supervises special needs students in the classroom.
18. Responsible for the supervision of special needs students upon arrival and departure from school.
19. Monitors activities to ensure safety and compliance with school rules.
20. Willingness to provide emergency first aid as necessary.
21. Willingness to obtain/possess a current First Aid card required.
22. Physical ability to perform required duties.
23. Willingness to receive training in crisis intervention and/or restraining techniques, and use those skills as determined by certified staff.
24. Willingness to assist with medically fragile children.
25. Willingness to work with students with behavior difficulties.
26. Must be able to work independently and solve problems with a minimum of supervision. 27. Must have the ability to apply appropriate discipline according to district procedures.
28. Ability to interpret as needed if the individual possesses multiple language skills.
29. Must have excellent attendance.
30. Other duties as assigned

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Criminal history clearance through Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  • Within the first year of employment, successfully complete the Washington State Fundamental Course of Study for Paraeducators provided by the District, as defined in RCW 28A.413.070, and continue to meet future requirements as mandated by the State.
