What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Manager position at Mother Earth Brew Co?
Mother Earth Brew Co is hiring a motivated Lab Manager at our Nampa, ID facility. Our brewery is housed in a 40,000 square foot facility where we produce about 30,000 bbls of beer per year. The ideal candidate would relish the opportunity to expand our quality assurance programs and make a name for themselves. Our current programs include sensory of product and raw materials, analytical beer specs via spectrophotometer, beer spoiler detection and micro, yeast propagation, and off flavor training. Currently this is a one person operation reporting directly to the Director of Brewing Operations and Head Brewer but working as part of the production team by leading training and actively participating in sampling and quality control.
General Responsibilities
- Measurement, record keeping, and reporting of results from analysis including: SRM, IBU, VDK, ABV, and pH
- Microbiological analysis of fermenting, chilled, post filter, package, and barrel aged products using manual plating and aseptic technique
- Sensory analysis and sample preparation using draught lab application to help with record keeping and reporting
- Yeast propagation from storage on a slant to inoculation in 5 bbl propagation tank
- Processing and reporting of fermentation data captured by brew staff in excel spreadsheet
- Host off flavor training for management and brewery staff
- Host and participate in virtual tastings of pilot and production beers with sales staff and California based brewing staff
- Propose methods to improve Mother Earth's QA/QC programs including basic ROI calculations
- Present research projects and findings to industry peers via MBAA, ASBC, and CBC
Qualifications
- BS/BA in brewing related field; Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Fermentation Science
- Experience with aseptic technique and laminar flow hood
- Competent in Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, PPT, Outlook
- Formal brewing education a plus
- Experience in brewery lab a plus
- Experience in analytical chemistry lab a plus
- Self motivated and ambitious
- Conscientious time management skills
