What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Editor position at Motherly?

Motherly (www.mother.ly) is a well-being brand redefining motherhood on behalf of a new generation of mothers, empowering modern mamas with expert information, an inspiring community, and thoughtfully curated products to guide her through the journey of motherhood.Motherly is seeking an Assistant Editor to join our fast-paced and tight-knit editorial team.


This role is multifaceted: you’ll be writing, editing and updating health & wellness, commerce and lifestyle content to drive search traffic. You’ll also work with freelance contributors and experts as part of the Motherly Collective, helping to shape stories to drive search traffic and to align with the brand voice and vision.    Having a strong foundation in SEO best practices is key, as you’ll utilize your skills to create SEO-optimized content to help reach new audiences. You’ll also assign and edit freelance stories, providing feedback as needed, and produce posts in Motherly’s CMS. If you’re passionate about women’s health, wellness and lifestyle content and have a track record in creating engaging, smart, informative stories with an empathetic voice, we’d love to hear from you.


Role and Responsibilities

  • Assist Health & Wellness Senior Editor and VP Content Strategy with administrative and editorial tasks
  • Build, update and optimize evergreen content based on SEO, commerce and editorial department needs
  • Identify, pitch and create on-brand stories that span health & wellness and lifestyle verticals with a strong basis in SEO that contribute to Motherly’s SEO-first content strategy and align with Motherly’s mission to empower mothers and enhance their well-being 
  • Work with freelance and Motherly Collective contributors on story ideas, providing edits and feedback, if necessary, and editing and publishing said content. 
  • Take a proactive metrics-first strategic approach to the company’s SEO and content strategy by engaging with traffic reports to identify trends and make content decisions based on data
  • Represent Motherly, which may include interviews, events or press trips, engaging with PR agencies, creating video content and appearing on the brand’s social handles, and more as needed
  • Light photo editing 


Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on health, science and lifestyle content
  • An ability to translate medical and scientific jargon into reader-friendly, engaging copy
  • Experience creating SEO-optimized content and updating content with SEO best practices
  • Detail-oriented, deadline focused with solid editing and copyediting skills
  • Experience in Google Analytics and SEMRush (and if not, you’re willing to learn!)
  • Highly organized 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, virtual environment, while collaborating cross-functionally and working independently


Qualifications and Education Requirements

Successful candidates must have: 

  • 1-3 years experience in editorial/digital media role
  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant journalism or similar field, health or science-related experience a plus


Preferred Skills

  • SEO/SEMRush expertise
  • Analytics experience in tools like Google Analytics
  • WordPress experience
  • A positive, can-do attitude. We're a tight-knit small team and we're looking for someone who is just as eager to learn and grow with the brand as we are
