Roles & Responsibilities:

The Mount Sinai Core Lab Chemistry and Immunology laboratory performs over 12 million assays per year, operating 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. This laboratory service provides STAT and routine testing of specimens across the entire Mount Sinai Health System. The laboratory services offered include clinical chemistry, serology, endocrinology, toxicology, blood gas, and Immunology.


The System-Wide Laboratory Operations Manager for Clinical Chemistry and Immunology (System-Wide Lab Operations Manager) is responsible for the oversight of the technical operations and administration of the Mount Sinai Clinical Chemistry and Immunology laboratories. This oversight will primarily encompass the Mount Sinai Core Chemistry, Immunology, and STAT laboratories. The System-Wide Lab Operations Manager will also assist Section Directors of the chemistry laboratories within the Continuum hospitals of the Mount Sinai Health System with laboratory management. The System-Wide Lab Operations manager will work collaboratively with the Core Chemistry Laboratory Directors, Continuum hospital Section Directors, and technical personnel to ensure the successful operation and management of the clinical chemistry laboratories. Furthermore, the System-Wide manager will interface with hospital administration as well as medical leadership to further the long-term goals of the Chemistry Department.

  • The System-Wide Lab Operations Manager's roles and responsibilities shall fall under two categories, duties encompassing solely laboratory operations of the Mount Sinai Core Chemistry Laboratory, and duties encompassing The Mount Sinai Health System as a whole.
  • Under the supervision of the Core Chemistry Laboratory Directors, The System-Wide Lab Operations Manager for Clinical Chemistry and Immunology will perform the following pertaining to the Mount Sinai Core Chemistry Lab:
  • Direct oversight of all technical and administrative laboratory operations of the Core Chemistry, STAT, and Immunology laboratories.
  • Develops and implements new technical procedures and laboratory workflows under the direction of the Laboratory Directors.
  • Periodically evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of laboratory workflows and processes, implements process improvements to ensure laboratory operational efficiency.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with established technical and operational standards set forth by Hospital Administration, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). Maintains needed documentation to ensure compliance.
  • Assists Chemistry Laboratory Quality Assurance manager in the performance lab regulatory testing, including, but not limited to, linearity, instrument crosschecks, and carry-over studies. Ensures all regulatory testing is performed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the acquisition of laboratory personnel, including technical staff, laboratory supervisors, and laboratory managers. Provides recommendations on employee advancement.
  • Oversees the orientation and training of new laboratory personnel. Ensures all training documentation is completed to meet CAP and NYSDOH standards
  • Oversees the implantation and assists in the performance of a personnel competency program acceptable to NYSDOH standards. The competency program shall include laboratory technologists, technicians, supervisors, as well as non-technical staff engaged in chemistry testing.
  • Assists laboratory supervisors and managers in the creation of a monthly and daily work schedule. Approves all employee schedules, vacation, and time-off requests. Ensure payroll processes are completed and approved in a timely manner.
  • Assists Laboratory Directors and Laboratory Quality Assurance Manager in the investigation of laboratory errors, clinician complaints, and adverse laboratory events. Assists in the performance of root cause analysis investigations, and the implantation of corrective actions.
  • Assess the operational health of the Laboratory daily, and makes operational and staffing adjustments to ensure the laboratory can meet clinical expectations. Communicates all expected operational delays to laboratory administration.
  • Plans and accommodates for projected increases in the demand for clinical laboratory testing associated with the expansion of services across the Mount Sinai Health System, particularly related to the Core Chemistry Laboratory.
  • Oversees the assessment and completion of performance evaluations for all laboratory employees, ensures all employee performance evaluations are completed and reviewed yearly.
  • Works with Labor Relations to assist Laboratory Directors and Senior Administrative Director in preparing warning notices, employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.

In addition to duties regarding the administration of the core chemistry laboratory, the System-Wide Lab Manager will assist in the management of the chemistry labs of the Mount Sinai Health System as a whole. In this role, under the direction of the Core Chemistry Laboratory Directors and System Laboratory Administration, the System-Wide Lab Manager will perform the following:

  • Develops and aligns technical policies and procedures to ensure consistency throughout The Mount Sinai Health System. These policies shall include, but are not limited to, competency, standard operating procedures, and regulatory practices.
  • Assists in aligning reference ranges, analytical measurement ranges, linearity, and therapeutic ranges across The Mount Sinai Health System.
  • Provides recommendations and technical insight on the selection of laboratory equipment, analyzers, and new testing on a system-wide level. Assists in instrumentation and test validation.
  • Establishes and aligns the quality management program with the System Director of QA. Selects and reports on key performance indicators and coordinates system-level performance improvement projects.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field required
  • Master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or related field strongly preferred
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required.
  • 3 - 5 years' experience in a clinical laboratory setting required
  • At least 5 - 10 years' experience in a clinical laboratory setting strongly preferred
  • ASCP Certification preferred
