JOB OVERVIEW
:

The Clinical Reading Instructor will carry out the district-wide plan to improve the reading achievement of all students assigned. This commitment will include attending professional development, collecting data, and providing feedback to the principal and to the district office of special education director. Under the supervision of the principal and the special education director, the Reading Teacher will develop and implement lesson plans to provide diversified reading strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

  • Assumes professional responsibility to interpret information from both formal and informal assessments for planning instruction.
  • Performs all duties as spelled out in the job of a teacher Diagnoses, assesses, prescribes, and evaluates the reading needs of individual students to determine level of need.
  • Carries out ongoing assessment of reading needs; writes and modifies the lesson plans as needed; maintains student achievement records.
  • Consults with other content teachers, special education teachers, parents and students, advising on strategies and activities that may be used to enhance a student’s reading skills.
  • Keeps parents, administrators, district and community informed about the reading programs/strategies in the school.
  • Participates in regular professional development to improve personal knowledge and skills.
  • Experience with creating and explaining growth of reading skills.
  • Experience with graphing/charting progress.
  • Experience presenting to parents and team at IEP meetings.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • Diagnose disorders and take the extra time needed to work with students working to overcome reading difficulties.
  • The clinical reading teacher will often use daily activities and assessments to identify and work with students who have literacy disorders, such as dyslexia and other reading deficits.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Reading preferred.
  • Must hold Maine Department of Education Special Education Teacher Certification (282) or ability to attain.
  • Training and/or knowledge in direct specialized reading programs necessary (Lindamood Bell, SPIRE, Wilson).
