CLASS TITLE: MECHANICAL SERVICE TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs work as an automotive mechanic for the school district; and performs related work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Training and Experience: A combination of training and experience equivalent to four years of automotive repair experience, including one year at journeyman level.
Knowledge of:
Ability to:
Driving a vehicle to conduct work. With or without accommodations, the ability to see and hear to conduct work, and speaking to exchange information. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally, or bending at waist to retrieve and store tools.
Licenses and Certificates:
Range 549 Board Approved - 5/22/07

REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must possess the knowledge and skill required for successful job performance as follows:
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
A combination of training and experience equivalent to four years of automotive repair experience, including one year at the journeyman level.
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Make-up, operation, and installation of all components, assemblies, and systems of vehicles such as engines, transmissions, front and rear end assemblies, power steering and braking mechanisms, electrical and hydraulic systems
•
Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the trade
SKILL IN:
•
Determining the extent to which major components should be torn down, what parts and mechanisms can be reworked, refitted, or replaced
•
Determining the types and extent of adjustment and alignment required
•
Following verbal and written instructions
•
Removal, rebuilding, adjustment, reinstallation, alignment, and meshing of major components and assemblies
•
The use of automotive test equipment
•
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others
ABILITY TO:
•
Secure a Class A Driver's license within six months of employment. Must be properly trained and certified through
a certification program approved under 40 CFR, Part 82

Job Description / Essential Elements:

- Inspects and diagnoses mechanical defects in school buses, trucks and cars
- Makes major and minor mechanical repairs
- Disassembles, repairs, grinds or replaces worn parts, fits new parts and adjusts engines, oil, water and fuel pumps, carburetors and fuel injector governors, starting motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and steering gear
- Repair and maintenance of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles
- Smogging of diesel fluid emissions
- Repair on computerized release on parking break for wheel chair vehicles
- Tank inspection service on slow burning diesel fuel
- Times and adjusts motors
- Replaces electrical wiring
- Makes service calls and emergency repairs
- Repairs generators, starters, lighting systems, wheel bearings and fuel pumps
- Rebuilds engines, may do body repair and automotive painting work
- Cleans and maintains all shop equipment
- Orders vehicle parts
