HOURS: Monday through Friday day shift
DEPARTMENT: Perinatal Clinic
SALARY: $5,688.80 - $9,285.47/Month
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
To coordinate, implement, oversee and/or participate in genetics clinics and programs and to provide genetic counseling, case management, patient education and follow-up for a specific patient population.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
- Patient Information Gathering and Evaluation
- Verifies patient identification and that genetic counseling services has been requested
- Explains the nature of genetics evaluation to families; utilizes interviewing techniques to obtain and review relevant information from the family using standard pedigree nomenclature
- Patient Education, Communication, Support and Care Management
- Evaluates data supplied and determines appropriate diagnosis and plan of treatment
- Provides comprehensive counseling to families about a wide range of prenatal and preconception indications
- Explains to families (verbally and/or in writing) medical information regarding the diagnosis and/or potential occurrence of a genetic condition or birth defect
- Discusses and provides education regarding available options and delineates risk, benefits and limitations of appropriate tests and clinical assessments
- Orders tests under physician supervision and performs assessments in accordance with locat, state, and federal regulations
- Provides ongoing emotional support to families throughout the counseling process and during extensive genetic tests (including invasive procedures); assist them with difficult aspects of findings
- Identifies and facilitates access to local, regional and national resources such as support groups and ancillary services; discusses the availability of such resources with families and provides referrals as necessary
- Documents case information clearly and concisely in the medical records and in correspondence to the referring provider; discusses case information with other members of the health-care team as necessary
- Performance Improvement, Quality of Care, and Customer Service Excellence
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the field and participates in clinical research programs as appropriate or when applicable; shares knowledge and expertise with colleagues and other members of the health-care team
- Participates in performance improvement processes for continuous improvement of patient care quality
- Works in partnership with other members of the health-care team to provide quality patient care; promotes a positive and collaborative work environment with all members of the patient care team
- Adheres to the accepted professional ethical standards and exercises effective customer service skills related to services, excellence, respect, values and ethics
- Performs other duties as assigned
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from the Medical Director and department manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision may be exercised over a small clerical staff.
INCENTIVES $30,000 total:

QUALIFICATIONS
A Master's degree from an accredited Genetic Associate Program or a Master's degree in Medical Genetics/Genetics Counseling/Training program.
Board Certification or Board eligibility by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling is necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 lbs and occasionally move objects up to 25 lbs.
This role may also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
