JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for developing culturally relevant lesson plans that meet the educational standards of programs within the Muckleshoot Department of Education ranging from Early Childhood, K-12, and Adult and Higher Education. The focus will be on the development of curricula with an emphasis in the following areas:
- Early Childhood Education Curriculum Developer
- Responsible for developing birth through 2nd grade curricula, developing and conducting critical staff training sessions, providing continued staff support
- In-depth understanding of human growth, development, and learning standards pertaining to students, early childhood through elementary
- Ensure curricula appropriately prepares students for third grade and beyond
- Familiarity with age-appropriate resources and teaching strategies
- Acts as a trainer and coach to new and qualified Early Childhood through 2nd grade teachers in regards to the implementation of cultural relevant curricula.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reviews state and national learning standards and aligns curricula to Muckleshoot and Washington State Educational Standards.
Collaborates with other Curriculum Developers, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Resource Developer to develop an early childhood to adult and higher education scope and sequence to constitute a Muckleshoot-centered, culturally relevant curriculum. This would include, coordinated and scaffolded lessons to support a seamless pathway and provide a comprehensive student learning experience.
Co-develops lessons and assignments pertaining to Muckleshoot cultural education with key leaders by sharing drafts and soliciting feedback and input.
Develop focused staff trainings to support the implementation of curricula across the Muckleshoot Department of Education Birth through Adult and Higher Education Programs. Including developing activities that will train teachers in content, teaching practices, and identifying possible guest speakers.
Review current existing curricula and resources to integrate as appropriate.
Collaborate with the Curriculum Resource Project Manager on educational resources including materials, videos, and branding
Contribute towards identifying methods for assessment and evaluation.
Conduct classroom observations of lessons to observe outcome and further curricula refinement.
Conduct regular curricula assessment to support a systematic implementation and ensure the curricula is meeting benchmarks.
Attends a variety of meetings, conferences and seminars to maintain current knowledge of standards-based education school efforts, educational research, trends, directions and issues; communicates findings as appropriate.
Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION
Required: Master’s degree in Education, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years teaching experience in a K-12 setting. Experience working with tribal populations, preferably the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe; curriculum and instructional development; accreditation requirements and processes.
Preferred: A proven track record of success working with Native American communities with curriculum development initiatives.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION
- Strong writing, proofreading, editing, and formatting skills
- Can work independently and adhere to timelines and deadlines
- Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in developing and presenting trainings and presentations
- Knowledge and experience of culturally responsive teaching, the Washington State OSPI Since Time Immemorial Tribal History and Culture Curriculum, and social emotional learning
- Strong research skills and the ability to identify content and sources that are intellectually and developmentally appropriate for students
- Demonstrated ability to manage, prioritize, and organize multiple tasks
- Proven track record to reliably meet project deadlines
- Experience in working in teams and demonstrating the ability to be proactive, collaborative, and flexible.
- Experience writing curricula and is effective in developing and implementing thematic units
- Understanding of tribal education programs and the best educational practices to achieve the highest state and national standards
- Understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and skilled in implementing Indigenous teaching strategies to meet the needs of our students
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Licenses or Certifications Required
WA State Teachers Certification or WA State Administrators certification required.
