GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reports to the Rehabilitation Services Director and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the day-to-day operations of the Manistee Health & Fitness. Develops, implements, and monitors individual fitness programs for referred patients and other customers. Exercises independent judgment with professional expertise in design and management of fitness programs and other services of Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology or related field.
  • Two or more years of experience in exercise or related field with supervisory abilities in order to a) develop suitable inter-personal, analytical and managerial skills, b) acquire an advanced knowledge of exercise and fitness principles, and c) develop skills in assessment, planning, and provision of services.
  • Current BLS and AED certification. Certified as personal trainer and/or exercise instructor.
  • Analytical and problem solving ability necessary to participate in preparing departmental budget, develop policies and procedures, develop or revise fitness programs, and resolve operational problems.
  • Analytical ability as well as visual, hearing and sensory touch acuity necessary to assess customers' condition, developmental needs, and utilize professional judgment in providing care to customers of all age populations (i.e., peds, geriatric, developmentally disabled, adolescent, and adult).
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with customers in sensitive or anxious situations explaining treatment purpose and procedures, function Job Description and purpose of equipment, and so forth. Ability to interact with all levels of employees, physicians, and representatives of outside agencies.
  • Managerial skills necessary to plan, organize, and direct the technical and administrative aspects of a department providing direct customer and/or patient services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In consultation with the Rehabilitation Services Director, develops departmental short and long term goals, and the plans necessary to accomplish agreed upon goals.
  • Participates in the development of and administers a departmental budget which provides for the attainment of agreed upon goals in accordance with approved plans.
  • Formulates policy for services of Manistee Health & Fitness. Communicates and enforces departmental and Hospital-wide policies and procedures. Provides the overall direction and direct supervision necessary to ensure effective and efficient delivery of fitness services.
  • Interviews, hires, disciplines, and recommends discharge of employees. Provides function specific orientation and inservice training programs for departmental employees. Encourages participation in continuing education programs for review of newly developed techniques and procedures.
  • Establishes standards for effective job performance and evaluates employees according to such standards. Schedules employees and assigns duties.
  • Responsible for the development of an effective department organizational structure including a) efficient work flow patterns, b) delineation of duties/responsibilities, and c) suitable staffing levels. Provides timely information to Employees through means including routine meetings and individual discussions on matters of interest or necessary to the effective performance of their job.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, documentation and monitoring of an on-going Quality Assessment program.
  • Develops and administers departmental safety programs; monitors employee conformance with safety standards.
  • Ensures that the department conforms to all standards and guidelines promulgated by pertinent governmental, regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Receives and investigates all complaints concerning the Fitness Center and its employees; determines veracity of such and takes appropriate corrective action and/or prepares reply.
  • Responsible for the care (handling and in-house servicing) and security of departmental equipment and facilities; obtains necessary repairs. Evaluates products and equipment and determines their viability for the department, initiates requisitions for preferred products. Responsible for procuring and maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment necessary for efficient operations.
  • Serves as liaison with other departments; establishes the working rapport necessary to develop cooperation and effectively integrate departmental services with the Medical Center's overall patient care delivery system.
  • Responsible for promoting/marketing utilization of departmental services by encouraging referrals from physicians, employers, and other community organizations.
  • Develops and secures approval for contracts for independent instructors and/or other fitness service providers.
  • Participates as member of Wellness Team, identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating community offerings related to wellness.
  • Participates on Hospital committees and in programs for safety, fire prevention, infection control, disaster, etc. Develops department-specific plans for inclusion in these Hospital-wide programs.
  • Assists or fill-ins for employees when/where needed in order to compensate for work load requirements, staff shortage, emergencies or other unanticipated situations, depending on priorities at that time.
  • Serves as advisor, speaker, coordinator and representative to employees, related agencies, and the community.
  • Regularly performs duties of personal trainer and fitness instructor.
  • Pursues a program of self-development; remains abreast of developments in by reviewing professional literature, attending seminars, participating in professional organizations and so on. Designs, recommends, implements and administers new programs/services.
  • Prepares department records, as well as recurring and special reports and analyses, ensuring that they are complete, accurate and timely; reviews and interprets reports/analyses in order to ascertain the extent to which program goals are being attained, and takes corrective action as necessary.
  • Performs job responsibilities in an ethical, compliant manner consistent with the organization's values and the Hospital's Corporate Compliance program, policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Applies PI concepts and methods throughout related activities.
  • Encourages subordinates and works in a safe and healthy manner to prevent injury or illness.
  • Applies CQI concepts and methods throughout related activities.
  • Performs job responsibilities in an ethical, compliant manner consistent with the organization's values and the hospital's Corporate Compliance Program, policies, procedures and protocols.
