Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs is part of Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Institutional Advancement Constituent Engagement Team and reports directly to the Senior Associate Director of Alumni Affairs. The Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs works in partnership with the Senior Associate Director to establish strategic direction and provide leadership for programs that seek to engage alumni from across MUSC, the state of South Carolina and around the world in a mutually beneficial lifelong connection to each other, their college, and MUSC.

Duties and Responsibilities

20%: Collaborating with the Senior Associate Director, develop and implement strategic programs that foster strong relations, goodwill, and philanthropy with alumni and support the University’s strategic plan and the goals of Institutional Advancement and The Constituent Engagement team. Work collaboratively to ensure that all programs are developed in partnership with the college partners and the Constituent Engagement team to ensure they support divisional and cross-divisional goals. These collaborations include partnering with divisional representatives and colleagues in other offices (i.e. MUSC Colleges, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, MUSC Marketing and Communications offices, Office of the Provost, etc.) and departments within Constituent Engagement (i.e. Annual Giving, Donor Relations and Events).

20%: Design, plan, and implement various alumni events, including but not limited to the  annual Alumni Weekend. Develop and manage affinity programming for specific alumni groups (i.e., young alumni, alumni from specific degree programs, reunion classes, etc.)

15% Oversee the student and new alumni engagement programs (0-10 years out). Develop innovative programs that build institutional pride amongst the student population. Educate graduating students about alumni benefits and engage them in programs.

15%: Develop marketing and communications strategies aimed at alumni involved in the above activities, staying abreast of various medias and evolving technologies to create a high level of engagement with alumni. Manage and coordinate business processes that support alumni programs including data entry and integrity, data transfer, direct mailings, broadcast emails, social media and promotional events.

10%:  Understand the skills and expertise of all working Alumni boards to build this organization’s participation in programs and activities effectively. Work with the Senior Associate Director to think strategically about new leadership for the Joint Alumni Board, specifically facilitating board transitions. When necessary, manage and support Joint Board activities.

10%: Work with the Senior Associate Director of Alumni to create strategic programs and connect alumni across the breadth of the University. Manage and implement relevant components of the program.

10%: Provide effective leadership and management by developing and managing metrics showing outcomes of programs, developing, and overseeing budgets for programming events, marketing, services, etc., and allocating resources to support existing and/or additional programs, services, and communications.

Training and Education:

Bachelor’s degree required. Three years related experience required. At least two years in a higher education or academic medical setting preferred. Experience working with, or in the, business sector, is preferred. Additional experience preferred with alumni volunteers, and University leadership.

Proven skills as a leader along with demonstrated ability to motivate, influence, and persuade. Demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with constituents and developing volunteer leadership. Ability to organize and complete multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, some involving volunteers. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels and the public. Proven ability to work successfully in a large, complex, sometimes ambiguous environment. Ability to travel and work on evenings and weekends as needed.

A bachelor's degree and two years related experience in an area such as alumni/development activities.
