A Sheriff Jail Clerk under general supervision of the Jail Administrator, performs a variety of clerical activities following well-defined departmental office procedures. A Sheriff Jail Clerk working at the front desk of the Muskegon County Jail, receives visitors for both public and professional inmate visitation, directing them to the appropriate visitation site; monitors the jail video visitation system and answers all incoming calls. An employee in this class operates the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) terminal, performing data entry and assisting various law enforcement agencies in supplying and receiving information. A Sheriff Jail Clerk often works under time constraints due to the sensitive nature of the documents (i.e. bench warrants, arrest warrants, court orders, etc.) A Sheriff Jail Clerk is expected to exercise judgment and knowledge obtained on the job, referring technical matters to supervisors for decision and direction.
1. Have completed one (1) year clerical or related program from an accredited college or business school; AND
Have a minimum of three (3) years full-time related clerical experience; OR
Have a minimum of five (5) years full-time related clerical experience.
2. Have the ability to type/keyboard at a rate of 40 corrected words per minute.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
An employee in this class performs generally sedentary work activities requiring the lifting of objects weighing thirty-five pounds (35) or less.
