Job Summary Graduate Optometric Technician
This is an advanced, senior-level position responsible for Optometrists in receipt of a Doctor of Optometry degree, but not yet licensed in the state in which he/she will work.
The Graduate Optometric Technician conducts all necessary patient pretesting and documents the medical history and chief complaint, including a complete screening and preparation of the patient for the doctor examination, including providing the doctor with basic interpretations of testing results and performing a variety of optometric functions for the doctor which may include anterior and posterior segment evaluation, refraction, (specialty) contact lens evaluation, and other optometric procedures deemed necessary and at the ultimate oversight of the attending, supervising optometrist.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Completely prepare the patient for the doctor. Review & document the patient medical history, current chief complaint and current medications, including the ability to anticipate, ask and document necessary follow-up questions and answer high-level follow-up questions from the doctor.
Conduct patient pretesting, including these procedures:
visual acuities, patient history, retinal imaging, and MAS (My Annual Supply) description, color vision, binocularity/stereo testing, basic lensometry, dilation, refraction, over-refraction of contact lens, trial framing , Goldmann tonometry, pupils, confrontations, EOMs, (and identify if there is an abnormality), contact lens fit and evaluation, Rx triage (spec and contact lens)
Using the following equipment:
auto refractor, tonometer, fundus imaging device, visual field analyzer, optical coherence tomography, phoropter, lensometer slit lamp, BIO. , Additional possible office equipment: Adapt Dx, electroretinography (ERG), topography, pachymetry, osmolarity, InflammaDry (Rapid Pathogen Screening) iLux and Lipiflow, if the office is so equipped.
Conduct certain entry-level optometric functions for the doctor, including refraction and the ability to prescribe RX for all needs, contact lens evaluation including specialty contact lens fitting, ability to administer dilating drops after reviewing angles with SLE, le to use BIO with emphasis on Posterior Segment Disease.
Demonstrate the professional judgment and ability to recognize valid pretesting results and repeat the procedure if necessary, including troubleshooting barriers to invalid testing via basic interpretation of those results.
Triage testing process to yield valid results
Assist the doctor with procedures including amniotic membrane, D&I, FB removal, etc., advanced lensometry, tear film osmolarity, and dry eye therapies.
Demonstrated competence inputting doctor exam findings using these systems: Acuity, EHR, CLX (contact lens management system), Unified (if applicable) or other retinal imaging display system, and any other system utilized in the office.
Work Experience
· 2-4 years of related optometry/vision care experience within a similar office environment is required.
Knowledge
· Advanced anatomy and nomenclature
o All in Tech 1 & 2 plus
o Identify abnormalities in:
§ Retinal imaging, visual fields, OCT, topography, other special testing used in that office
· Nevus, Heme, CWS, Drusen, Glaucoma
§ Visual field
· True defect v trial lens or unreliable field
o Identify basic disease states diabetic retinopathy, AMD
· Post-operative care
o All in Tech 1 & 2 plus
o Identify, perform and enter necessary pretesting information for the doctor
o Know which procedures can and cannot be performed per post-op care standards (ex. No Goldmann on day 1 post-op Lasik)
o Know what complications the doctor will be looking for per post-op procedures
· Advanced spectacle principles
o All in Tech 1 & 2 plus
o Seg Ht & PD relation to patient complaints/rechecks
o Ability to discuss and/or introduce various lens options based on patient complaint/questions (ex. computer pal)
· Advanced contact lens principles
o All in Tech 1 & 2 plus
o Ordering specialty lenses
o I&R for specialty contact lenses
o Caring protocols for various specialty lenses or lenses most often used by the practice
· Coding
o Demonstrated ability to discuss fee per service(s) needed the day of the evaluation/examination with and pertaining to insurance
o CI eval fees, MAS pricing
o Exam v office visit
o Special testing
o Plus whatever is added to Tech 2 (not done yet)
o Plus whatever is needed in excess of Tech 1 & 2
· Miscellaneous includes but is not limited to:
o Advanced understanding of instrument cleaning and disinfection
o Judge validity of test vf, oct, photos, fix problems associates with unreliable testing, know when to stop testing when valid results not possible
Education
· Bachelor of Science in Visual Science required
Credentials
· American Board of Optometry certifications or equivalent preferred
o Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
o Certified Paraoptometric (CPO)
· American Board of Opticianry certifications or equivalent preferred
o National Opticianry Competency
o Contact Lens Registry
Working Conditions
· Must to able to travel locally 5%
· Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs.
