Position Overview:
Responsible for accurate and reliable underwriting activities for all lines of business. Generate insurance proposals, renewals, and other insurance plan related reports, quotes, financial settlements, etc., for the Marketing and Actuarial Services Departments. Primary business focus will be large groups. Provide assistance to marketing, agents and the Sales Administration Team on Group and Individual.
Essential Responsibilities:
Apply established formulas and guidelines for timely and accurate rating of existing and prospective insurance contracts. Clearly articulate the reasoning and method behind rating actions.
Provide large group new business and renewal underwriting. Apply established formulas and guidelines for timely and accurate rating of prospective insurance contracts
Process insurance plan proposals, alternate and optional quotes, ASO contracts, and declinations. Make necessary computations from information contained in company software and database applications, prepare all supportive documentation, assemble final information and documents properly, and distribute finished items to the proper individuals
Provide backup and mentoring for Group Underwriter(s) and continue process improvement measures.
Produce and maintain charts, tables, the Actuarial Services Manual, and other various Actuarial Services documents, under the direction of supervisor.
Provide support to the Marketing Department, brokers, and agents by offering technical expertise regarding rating and benefit evaluation.
Provide information to, or requests information from, group policy administrators, agents, and other internal or external customers in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner
Assist in maintaining Underwriting policies and procedures on-line and communicates those to the appropriately affected departments.
Coordinate business activities by maintaining collaborative partnerships with key departments.
Assist with process improvement and work with other departments to improve interdepartmental processes. Utilize lean methodologies for continuous improvement. Utilize visual boards and daily huddles to monitor key performance indicators and identify improvement opportunities.
Supporting Responsibilities:
Work collaboratively with other department staff members to develop department best practices and address issues.
Meet department and company performance and attendance expectations.
Follow the PacificSource privacy policy and HIPAA laws and regulations concerning confidentiality and security of protected health information.
Perform other duties as assigned.
SUCCESS PROFILE
Work Experience: At least 3 years of group underwriting experience in the health insurance industry including but not limited to, the preparation of health insurance industry documents and data entry. Preference for underwriters with proposal experience, medical underwriting and risk adjustment methods.
Education, Certificates, Licenses: Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience
Knowledge: Knowledge of underwriting concepts and ability to employ established underwriting procedures. Requires a detailed understanding of Marketing and Actuarial Services. Ability to identify problems, develop solutions, articulate the reasoning, and implement a chosen course of action Experience in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Windows desirable. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, within the company, with brokers, and with groups. Requires basic math skills, including percentages, ratios, graphing and spreadsheet skills.
