Required Skills/Job Duties
- Performs and/or assists pathologists in the accessioning, dissection, description, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomical specimens.
- Helps train entry level resident physicians and/or pathologists’ assistants in gross room pathology methodology and procedures, under guidance and within protocol parameters provided by medical professional staff.
- Participates in the accessioning and labeling of specimens, specimen storage and disposal, and the maintenance of reagents and equipment in the gross room.
- Assists in the histology laboratory in preparing slides.
- Performs other miscellaneous job-related duties as requested or assigned.
- Resolve and document problem specimens.
- Make pre-numbered cassettes
Preferred skills:
- Embed processed tissue according to GIPP protocols
- Assist in filing slides and blocks, help with gathering of marketing materials, etc. and in general, help where needed in the lab during slow periods..
- Maintain cleanliness within the lab with no eating, drinking, applying cosmetics, or smoking in work areas.
- Maintain an appropriate professional appearance and attitude during work hours May also include additional duties such as
- Maintain daily pick-up and delivery within specified time for those customers as designated in courier program.
- Secure and process medical specimens.
- Responsible for safe driving habits.
** Must be flexible to work all assigned duties as business need changes
Required Education/Degree
- Bachelor's degree is required or equivalent education met in section two. Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science preferred. Minimum requirements for persons having earned a Bachelor’s degree in a subject other than a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science include –
- Section (2) At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that includes one of the following--
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or
- Six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology, and 12 additional semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
- Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHA (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above) or at least three (3) months documented laboratory training for gross examination of patient specimen(s).
- In addition to, person that do not have an earned Bachelor’s degree must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent and have documentation of training appropriate for gross examination of patient specimen(s) prior to September 1, 1995.
Required Work Experience:
- 1 year(s) of experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.
