About the Chief Strategy Office

The Chief Strategy Office (CSO) leads and oversees the development, communication, and execution of the NAACP’s mission-driven strategies. The CSO is primarily responsible for the alignment and integration of the Association’s goals throughout all levels of the organization. This focus includes various high-impact initiatives, leveraging strategies leading to sustainable growth, a comprehensive policy agenda, and innovation.

About the Development Team

The Development Team consists of three pillars: individual giving, institutional giving, and development operations. The individual and institutional giving teams are comprised of gifts officers focused on frontline fundraising, who oversee a comprehensive moves management process to identify potential donors and steward them through their giving journey with the NAACP. 

About the Major Gifts Officer ($100K )

The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is responsible for actively driving the Development Department’s fundraising efforts with a focus on individual donors and major gifts ($100,000 ). This position works under the direction of the Vice President, Individual Giving, and in collaboration with the Development Department, to assure that ample unrestricted and program funds are generated to enhance and support the overall mission of NAACP. 

The ideal candidate will be a development professional who thrives at frontline fundraising work in a fast-paced, high-growth work environment. A willingness to work as part of a team and respond quickly to changing dynamics is also necessary for success. With high-impact development management experience, the ideal candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively with all staff and volunteers in a diverse and brisk environment; is self-motivated and highly organized, with exceptional attention to accuracy; is flexible with the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously, and has a keen passion for racial equity and social justice and strong alignment with NAACP’s mission and values.

Under the supervision of, and working closely with the Vice President of Individual Giving, the MGO is responsible for managing a portfolio of donors and prospects with the capacity to make contributions of $100,000 .  The MGO builds meaningful relationships with current and new major donors, moving donors through the giving pipeline, and working with the Vice President of Individual Giving to build and diversify the donor base.  

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

• Working collaboratively across the Individual Giving team, develop and execute strategies for meeting NAACP long-term fundraising objectives from individuals;
• Cultivate, solicit and steward new and existing major donors ($100,000 ) in support of NAACP’s mission;
• Manage a portfolio of 125-150 current donors and prospects nationwide, including research, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship and regularly track progress;
• Meet annual and long-term portfolio goals for revenue growth;
• Collaborate with appropriate NAACP program staff to craft cultivation and stewardship collateral;
• Work with Events team to develop and implement strategies to maximize donor participation in special events and ensure timely, appropriate follow-up for cultivation activities;
• Oversee regular donor communication via written and electronic correspondence, ensuring all outreach is relevant, timely and professionally executed;
• Establish and build strong long-term partnerships with our major gift donors;
• Keep donors engaged and informed about the organization’s work through regular updates, meetings and small group events;
• Work with the Development team to attract and engage a diverse array of major donors;
• Develop, execute and track individual plans to cultivate and solicit each donor/prospect in the portfolio;
• Maintain up-to-date and accurate database records for assigned donors, recording all interactions including detailed meeting reports in Salesforce CRM
• Prepare highly personalized proposals, stewardship reports and correspondence for donors;
• Work with program staff on donor engagement opportunities and to develop content for proposals that align program priorities with donor interests;
• Participate in donor cultivation events;
• Maintain deep knowledge of NAACP programs and activities;
• Attend NAACP events as requested; and
• Special projects and events and other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Individual Giving and designees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational/Professional Experience

• Bachelor's degree required;
• 7-10 years’ experience in fundraising;
• Experience in cultivating and closing six- and seven-figure gifts;
• Experience in relationship management with knowledge of volunteer management and donor cultivation and stewardship as well as experience closing major gifts from first-time donors (not just renewals and upgrades);
• Excellent interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills and ability to prioritize and execute responsibilities in the face of conflicting priorities;
• Comfort and experience in writing fundraising collateral;
• Personal qualities of strong work ethic, emotional intelligence, and diligence;
• A sense of humor, tolerance for change, and a demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive culture;
• A demonstrated style of collaborative leadership in working with senior executives, peers, and staff;
• Desire to work in an environment of consensus-based decision making and cross-disciplinary cooperation;
• Proven experience in -- and a personal passion for -- building effective, collaborative teams that achieve financial goals in sustainable, ethical ways; and
• Extensive Salesforce management experience.
