Position: Controller 

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer 

Classification: Exempt 

Date of Revision: 8/2021


Summary

The Controller’s primary rolls will be to: (1) assist in managing the firm’s financial information (2) manage the day to day operation of the accounting/finance team (3) provide timely and accurate financial reporting to NAC’s CEO, CFO, Principals and Associate Principals (4) assist with quarterly and year-end closing and reporting processes (4) assist in ensuring adequate internal controls are in place to safeguard NAC financial assets and provide for accurate financial reporting and (5) assist in maintaining budget and forecasting processes. Although this position ultimately reports to the CFO, there will be mutual accountability to/from the CEO, and Principals and Associate Principals.



Requirements

Essential Functions:


Financial Accounting


A. Daily Activities:

  • Participate in day-to-day accounting processes to ensure proper and accurate tracking of NAC’s financial activity.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the finance/accounting team, including accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, project accounting and fixed assets.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and training for the finance team.
  • Assist in more fully implementing finance software applications.

B. Monthly Activities:

  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly close.
  • Prepare certain journal entries.
  • Review and/or reconcile balance sheet accounts.
  • Perform high-level analytical review of income statements.
  • Prepare various reports and analysis that supplement monthly financial statements.
  • Review B&O reports.

C. Quarterly Activities – in addition to monthly activities:

  • Ensure an accurate and timely quarter-end close.
  • Assist CFO with preparation of Quarterly Financial Review information and presentation.
  • Review quarterly payroll tax reports.
  • Review reports to other taxing authorities (i.e. sales and use tax, etc.).

D. Annual Activities – in addition to monthly and quarterly activities:

  • Ensure an accurate and timely year-end close.
  • Assist with financial review performed by our external CPA.
  • Assist with providing information for federal and state income tax returns.
  • Review annual payroll reports.
  • Review 1099s and other reports to taxing authorities.
  • Assist CFO with firm valuation and annual presentation to the shareholders.
  • Review annual B&O tax reconciliations.

E. Internal Controls

  • Assist CFO with the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal controls.
  • Assist in maintaining an appropriate level of security over critical and sensitive physical and electronic information.

F. Forecast and Budgeting

  • Assist CFO with implementation and maintenance of forecast and budgeting systems.

G. Other

  • Provide first-line supervision for the finance team.
  • Provide mergers and acquisition accounting support when needed.
  • Respond to requests for finance related information and support.
  • Support CFO with special projects and workflow process improvements.
  • Other Financial Accounting functions as deemed necessary.

  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Prepared to learn and challenge conclusions or requests
  • Ability to engage problem solving skills and analysis, and report findings effectively
  • Proficient in Microsoft office software applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of Deltek VantagePoint a plus

Certification Requirements

  • CPA is a plus but not necessary

Supervisory Requirements

  • May be assigned a team of project accountants

Work Environment

  • This position operates in a professional open office environment with low to moderate noise levels including collaborative work areas for team meetings. Each office provides collaborative work areas and shared resources such as video conferencing, printing/scanning and a café for dining.

Physical Demands

  • Hand/Wrist/Finger dexterity for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week
  • Ability to lift and move 15 lbs
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time

Position Type/Hours expected to work

  • This is a full-time position with a minimum expectation of 40 hours per week

Travel

  • None

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • A minimum of ten years of accounting/finance experience with prior managerial experience preferred
  • Experience in the A/E/C industry or other project-based industries preferred
