NDS Mesa Energetics Development Scientist

Nammo Defense Systems Inc., a defense contractor, manufactures and supports shoulder-fired systems; energetic material solutions such as aircraft emergency escape systems, actuation devices, rocket motors, warheads, medium & large caliber ammunitions, mortar ammunition; and composite solutions including carbon fiber tubes and composite aero-structures.

Position Summary:

The Energetics Development Scientist serves in the Research Propellant, Explosives and Pyrotechnics (PEP) Department supporting a wide spectrum of Research department activities. The Scientist reports to the PEP Manager. The scientist will work collaboratively with peers and Research Operations Manager to support execution of Research activities supporting energetics production programs. The department has near term future plans to pursue more contracted technology programs, and as such this position will potentially transition to supporting these activities.

The Scientist will develop in this role to become a subject matter expert in energetic formulating, processing, and testing. In this capacity the scientist will serve as the principal investigator for production support efforts and energetics technology development projects to include materials evaluation, formulation tuning, manufacturing process technology development and applied technologies. In support of these programs, the Scientist draws from his/her energetics formulation and processing knowledge. The Scientist proposes, scopes, leads, manages, and participates in internally and externally funded efforts. 

The Scientist also serves as a floating resource to assist the PEP team in execution of activities when resources are needed to support miscellaneous overhead, continuous improvement, and capital improvement efforts. 

The Scientist will participate in Research initiatives to support the Energetic Materials Manufacturing group (Plant 4) and Research achieve safe and accurate production of energetics.

The Scientist will support Research bid and proposal for both internally and externally funded efforts, drawing input from the Research Operations Manager and PEP Manager as required.


Primary Responsibilities:

• Serve as a principal investigator of production and development projects to include white paper, scope of work generation, bid and proposal, execution, and project management.
• Support technical proposal (TP) efforts for the Research department, drawing input from both the Research Operations and PEP groups. Provide labor, equipment, and material estimates for Research scope of work required to support production, IRAD, and contracted technology development projects.
• Develop and apply knowledge of energetic materials to propose and safely conduct experiments on propellants, pyrotechnics, and/or explosives to meet objectives.
• Establish test plans to include design of experiment. Review results of experiments and analyses performed by other scientists or technicians. Prepare technical reports detailing work progression and results.
• Serve as a subject matter expert resource supporting energetic material production across all NDS plants.
• Provide Energetic Materials Manufacturing support to ensure safe and accurate production of propellant.
• Support factory with production issue failure analysis.
• Make oral presentations outlining/summarizing progress on selected projects and programs to both internal and external customers.
• Be engaged in the technical community. 
• Capture best practices within Nammo and within industry for energetics manufacturing. 
• Provide training to technicians and peers in other work groups

Required Experience & Skills:

• Minimum 4-year degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related field strongly preferred.
• Preferred 4 years work experience in engineering, material science, or manufacturing environment
• Desired but not required experience in formulating, manufacturing, or testing of propellants, pyrotechnics and/or explosives.
• Strong aptitude as a scientist or engineering.
• Strong affinity for design of experiment and data analysis.
• Solid modeling/drafting and part/tool design experience preferred.
• Experience leading/managing program/projects.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
• Ability to work effectively and communicate well with the cross-functional NDS Mesa Team.
• Must have a strong work ethic and be well organized to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Must be able to wear safety equipment such as respirators or self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Must be able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force in the course of normal work.
• Ability to obtain BATF approval to engage in certain explosive operations
