Position Description:
The Painter is responsible for the appropriate selection, surface preparation and placement of a wide variety of coating systems. The Painter is responsible for maintaining MSDS, equipment, coating product inventory and provide supervisor with long range planning information required for cycled tasks. The Painter must work hours appropriate to meet the needs of Zoo staff and visitors and consistent with peak season days and hours. This may require weekend, early or late shift start times.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the application of coating systems that meet zoo and/ or regulating agency mandated standards.
- Responsible for ensuring appropriate surface preparation and material selection decisions are made to guarantee the longevity of finished product.
- Responsible for maintaining MSDS for all coating systems used in the zoo, ensuring that products used have been authorized through the internal approval process.
- Ensure that work being performed has a minimal disruptive effect on staff, guests, and our animal collection.
- Ensure that all assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles are properly maintained.
- Assist other facilities team members and/or zoo contractors as needed.
- Adhere to established safety guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Skills:
- Must have a working knowledge of all paint and other coating material application tools and equipment such as rollers, brushes, scrapers, compressors, compressed air/electric and electrostatic sprayers.
- Must have a working knowledge of a wide variety of coating materials such as latex, enamels, oils, acrylics, urethanes, wood/concrete sealers and where they are to be appropriately used.
- Ability to plan out, schedule, coordinate and execution of all tasks to ensure a high-quality finished product.
- Ability to perform other essential maintenance tasks within the Facilities Department as needed.
- Ability to safely work with ladders, scaffolding, personnel-lifts and from boom trucks.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of occupational hazards involved and safe work practices.
- Mechanical/carpentry knowledge is a plus in order to assist with other tasks in the Facilities Department.
- Strong interpersonal skills including ability to get along with diverse groups with tact and maturity.
- Ability to always represent the Nashville Zoo in a professional manner.
- Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, co-workers, visitors, and general public.
Education/ Experience:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of 4 years’ experience with various coatings in a variety of environments.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Physical Responsibilities:
- Ability to work outdoors year-round, including in inclement weather.
- Ability to stand and walk for an extended period.
- Must be able to work from scaffolding and lifts.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, twist, reach and extend themselves, etc., as required for assigned tasks.
- Ability to move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance.
Work Schedule:
- Must be available to work any of seven days of the week.
- Must be available to work special needs or events that may occur outside of regular work schedule, including evenings, weekends, or holidays, as required.
