What are the responsibilities and job description for the Stable Isotope Signatures in Planetary Environments position at National Aeronautics and Space Administration...?
This is an opportunity to conduct research on methods, approaches, and protocols for the detection and characterization of stable isotope signatures in planetary analog environments in support of current and future Mars missions. Current research in the Planetary Environments Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight center includes exploring the use of stable isotopes as biosignatures on Mars, and characterizing carbon and nitrogen cycling in Mars analog environments. In addition, the Isotope Facility is directly involved in development of in situ methods to measure stable isotopes on planetary missions, and analyses to support isotopic measurements on the Mars Science Laboratory Rover, Curiosity.
The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in geology, geochemistry, or chemistry, with a strong background in isotope geochemistry and an interest in planetary science. Experience with isotope ratio mass spectrometry, trace gas analysis, and field-work is highly desirable. Facilities support both compound specific and bulk isotopic analysis, including carbonates, as well as field-deployable cavity ringdown spectrometers for CO2 and CH4 carbon isotope analysis of trace gases.
