NASA Glenn Research Center seeks qualified and enthusiastic candidates to perform research and development on thermal to electric power systems for aerospace applications. The research is centered on concept development and technology maturation related to thermodynamic heat engines, heat source integration, waste heat rejection, and power management for nuclear radioisotope and fission electric power systems. Specific focus areas include Stirling and Brayton power conversion devices, high temperature materials integration, fluidic heat transfer systems, heat exchangers, gas bearings, linear and rotary alternators, electrical controllers, heat pipes, and thermal radiators. Technology maturation is pursued through conceptual design, computational tool development, parametric system modeling, and a broad range of experimental testing. Interdisciplinary analysis is performed to resolve thermodynamic cycle, mechanical, structural, fluid, heat transfer, and electrical performance across the integrated thermal to electric power system. A primary area of emphasis is the performance verification testing of components and systems in a relevant environment in order to validate design methods and analytical predictions. Laboratory testing is conducted in both air and thermal/vacuum to characterize system performance, life, and reliability. Goals of this research are to advance the maturity of thermal to electric power conversion systems and components, increase the performance efficiency, and/or increase the reliability and robustness of the technology.
