The primary purpose of this position is securing major philanthropic gifts from individuals and institutions to meet the priority needs of the Gallery. The incumbent reports to the Chief Development Officer. 





Qualifications:

Candidates must meet the Qualifications Standards Handbook requirements for the NF-1001-15

Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal NF-14 level, eliciting major philanthropic gifts.

An equivalent combination of education and experience is fully qualifying and meets the minimum qualification requirements.

  • Ability to apply fundraising skill, strategies, and practices to cultivating prospective corporate and foundation donors.
  • Thorough knowledge of giving arrangements and the ability to quickly learn and navigate the procedures, policies, and regulations of a large organization.
  • Ability to supervise others, delegate, establish priorities effectively, and set deadlines.
  • Experience working with leadership across an organization in developing new programs and/or initiatives.

 "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Responsibilities:

As the Senior Development Officer (Director of Strategic Giving) you will:

  • Lead the National Gallery’s identification, cultivation, and solicitation of corporate, foundation, and institutional donors, with a focus on attracting commitments at the $250,000 level and carrying out the full range of supervisory duties.
  • Work with Gallery colleagues to develop new and special opportunities, initiatives, and partnerships to further engage prospects and donors.
  • Join in campaign strategy and other long-term planning for the department, including potential cultivation of key individual donors as appropriate.
  • Oversee the tracking and acknowledgment process for institutional grants and gifts.
  • Effectively steward donors once gifts have been realized through a variety of stewardship and engagement tools (e.g.,required grant reporting and tailored reports on programmatic outcomes).
  • Set short- and long-term goals for program direction and growth and develop strategies to achieve these goals. 
  • Ensure activities are well-integrated with other fundraising and stewardship activities of the development office and help the Gallery to achieve its overall development goals. 
  • Document cultivation and solicitation efforts in accordance with department procedures, including regular use of Raiser’s Edge. Prepare clear and succinct reports of activities and results.
