Position Summary

The Education Coordinator for NYAP’s La Jornada (The Journey) Program focusing on Long-Term Foster Care (LTFC) is responsible for coordinating education for youth who have fled their country of origin and arrived in the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian, and ensuring staff receive required training.

The Education Coordinator will coordinate educational and vocational services for minors reflective of NYAP’s values, culture, and mission across various mediums; assist foster parents with the coordination of public school enrollment for youth; advocate in matters of education on behalf of minors; manage community based partnerships to ensure minors receive vocational services; oversee a team of youth advocates; communicate regularly with foster families and program administration staff; and responsible for education-related records and reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s Mission, Values and Philosophies.
  • Serve as the educational coordinator ensuring all services provided reflect NYAP’s mission, vision and values.
  • Coordinate public school enrollment for minors.
  • Develop and implement a weekly mentoring and vocational program as defined by program plan.
  • Create a yearly calendar that incorporates field trips, workshops and cultural acculturation opportunities.
  • Create partnerships with post-secondary entities such that provide trainings in high growth fields.
  • Manage a team of youth advocates and their caseloads.
  • Coordinate travel of minors when needed.
  • Serve as liaison to ensure minors have an advocate in matters of academic progress, behavior concerns, school suspension and/or expulsion and develop alternative plan for supervision when needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with foster families and program administration staff.
  • Ensure all area program records are maintained in a confidential manner and site reports are timely, complete and accurate.
  • Meet ORR training requirements and follow ORR policies and field guidelines.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with personnel policies and fiscal guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Experience working with community based providers.
  • 3 years of progressive supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency required.
  • Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, internet search, people management programs, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Must demonstrate a sincere commitment to the service and advocacy for youth and families.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, automotive insurance and a good driving record.
  • Minimum automobile insurance coverage of $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury liability.

  • Demonstrate a high degree of customer service and relationship building abilities.
  • Must be able to embrace working as a diverse team both effectively and respectfully with persons of any background, race, color, religion, sexual orientation, ability, national origin, or culture.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong project management, leadership, and team building skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of an extended cross-functional team.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
