Overview

Emergency Communications Center Specialist-Communications Center

 

The Emergency Communications Center Specialist provides high quality professional support to internal and external customers in a manner which meets or exceeds defined department objectives. Receives and transmits emergency and urgent information via radio, computer, and telephone to pre-hospital and in-house personnel. Alerts and dispatches the various Code teams within the hospital. Serves as a liaison for the Security Department, physicians, referring hospitals, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and other pre-hospital care providers. Performs the function of the hospital operator during specific hours. This position will work in a team environment to maximize individual and team performance and will work closely with the security dispatchers of the Hospital Security Department.

 

Schedule: **This is a 38hrs per week.Team member will work 9, 8-hour shifts in a 2 week period. Shift is 4p-12:30a. Every other weekend. Holiday requirements (about 2-3/year)**

 

Training Schedule: During the orientation process, shift flexibility will be necessary, and the candidate will have to follow their preceptor's scheduled template

Responsibilities

1. Directs incoming inter-hospital transport and scene/EMS calls received to appropriate resource expeditiously.2. Obtains and accurately documents clinical information from referring physicians, hospitals, special care facilities, EMS agencies and communicates this to appropriate Emergency services personnel ( via Vocera, phone, and written).3. Facilitates coordination/medical control of private ground and air transport units.4. Documents designated communications/events in written logs and computerized databases.                                  5. Assists in development of computer programs, report designs, and monthly statistical reports.6. Maintains working knowledge of new systems employed in ECC.7. Assists in the dispatch of Security personnel and logs all Security calls.8. Serves as a liaison with Public Relations Department, referring Physicians, ED staff, Transport Team, Safety/Security officers, and other parties to facilitate accurate communications regarding hospital campus activities.9. Monitors security cameras and reports suspicious activity to appropriate security personnel.10. Monitors the hospital fire alarm system, as well as the Security Pegasys system, reports all alarms to appropriate parties.  

11. Monitors, communicates and documents alarms, alerts, and overhead pages in the primary campus, expanded campus, and offsite buildings.

12. Acts as the back-up Communication Command Center for the Lewis Center Emergency Department as needed.

13. Acts as the Communication Command Center for current expanded campus buildings under construction, and those planned for future projects14. Activates trauma paging system for Level I, Level I-Neuro, and Level II trauma alerts.

15. Receives “hot line” and Code calls, alerts appropriate staff by pagers and/or overhead systems.

16. Monitors and dispatches emergency alerts to all hospital staff via the Mass Notification System (CHAS).

17. Assists in training of new staff and documents their progress per orientation guidelines.

18. Documents all billing information for contract ground and air medical services on appropriate spreadsheets and ensure correct medical record numbers and account numbers and complete information needed.19. Facilitates incoming calls for the hospital PBX telephone system. Maintains all hospital PBX functions during designated shifts.20. Demonstrates current knowledge of the NCH ECC, PBX and Security policies and procedures.21. Participate in research, quality initiative activities and special projects in the department and hospital.22. Performs additional duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, or at least 2 years as a PCA, Medical Assistant, Respiratory Care, or Nursing, or equivalent is preferred.

Experience:

  • A level of knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and/or pre-hospital procedures.
  • Experience in an Emergency Department, prehospital care, or other clinical setting desirable.
  • Familiarity with personal computer and/or mainframe systems required. Skill in using database and spreadsheet software highly preferred.
  • Analytical and organizational skills required to effectively respond to, track, and document activities related to patient transport, hospital security, and pre-hospital providers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving / critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Ability to function calmly and effectively in a stressful environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to remain courteous and tactful when dealing with both internal and external customers.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when receiving instructions, guidance or feedback.
