What are the responsibilities and job description for the Process Engineer, Lamination position at Natron Energy?
Natron is seeking an Engineer to develop robust processes for pouch sealing, lamination, and cell leak detection, and to implement these processes into production in Santa Clara Battery and Pack Pilot line, a volume manufacturing line in Michigan, and our novel battery manufacturing operations for Gigafactories.
In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, this engineer will work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality, and Production to take battery design changes and new battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production. Critical activities include process development, yield improvement, troubleshooting, introducing and qualifying new processes and equipment, determining robust operating conditions for all processes to facilitate transfer to contract manufacturers, and assisting contract manufactures with absorbing Natron processes. Tenacious commitment to continuous improvement with thoughtful, collaborative and disciplined execution is a must.
- Initiate and lead process improvement projects in optimizing lamination process. Implement QC to create high confidence in product quality with hermetically sealed packages.
- Function as the subject matter of expert on pouch sealing, lamination, and battery leak detection process. Develop processes that drive six sigma excellence.
- Initiate and lead projects for process improvement in the fabrication/assembly of battery electrodes and cells. Process including electrode calendaring, electrode drying, cell stacking, welding, lamination, electrolyte fill, degassing, cell testing, pack or module packaging, etc.
- Support new product introduction and sustaining product process optimizations.
- Work effectively with cross functional teams to implement new equipment, fixtures, and procedures to improve quality, yield, uptime, cycle time and throughput.
- Perform DOE, process capability, PFMEA, control plans, process flow charts, cycle time studies and line balancing activities.
- Perform DF(X) design for manufacturing/test/assembly analysis on existing and new productions.
- Develop, update and maintain process documentation and SPC based manufacturing control plan for good manufacturing execution and product transfer to other sites.
- Analyze and plan workforce utilization, space/tools requirements, workflow, design layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency in accordance with Lean manufacturing principles.
- Work with production and other services Team members to determine root causes of product defects, poor product performance, line down time.
- Assist directly with the transfer of processes from pilot operation in Santa Clara to manufacturing operations in Holland MI. Assist directly with technology innovation, design, and transfer for a gigafactory. Occasional travel may be required (<20%).
- Degree in Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Experience in an industrial environment in manufacturing chemicals, batteries, cell, energy systems, Semiconductor, FPD, PCB, Solar or other electrochemical hardware systems.
- Fluency in Six Sigma problem-solving method and tools including DOE, fishbone, FMEA, Control Charts and statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated experience solving process yield, throughput and product quality problems.
- This is a regular, full-time position.

- The salary range for this position is a minimum of $111,500 and a maximum of $131,000.
