Navarro Research and Engineering has an immediate opening for a WIPP Site Underground Operations Technical Specialist in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This position will support the Department of Energy (DOE) CBFO Office of National TRU Program Waste Certification and Disposal (NTPWCD) Division in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of this position include performing oversight activities of WIPP Site underground operations to ensure compliance with applicable requirements for the safe handling and emplacement of mixed TRU waste in the underground repository, as well as oversight of general overall mining activities. Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to oversight of the following:
- Waste handling activities such as U/G waste transport and waste emplacement activities;
- Personnel training and qualification for U/G waste handling personnel, RadCon technicians, mining operations personnel, maintenance personnel, etc.;
- Mining activities such as salt mining, floor milling, rib cutting, material transporting, and hoisting activities;
- Ground control activities such as scaling, bolting, and fencing;
- U/G equipment maintenance such as mining machinery, salt haulers, bolters
- U/G waste handling operations for abnormal events;
- Use of facility transfer vehicles;
- Forklift operations;
- Equipment calibration;
- Equipment, packaging, and facility maintenance;
- Radiological surveys, abnormal radiologic conditions, radiological posting and access controls, and emergency radiological control responses;
- Conduct of operations;
- Work control processes and activities;
- Procedure development;
- Lockout/Tagout;
- Log keeping;
- Issues Management.
Candidate must be able to:
- Periodically provide site operations status reports;
- With CBFO approval initiate issues in the WIPP's Issue Management System and the CBFO Corrective Action Reports system and follow through to completion and closure;
- Report abnormal operations to management;
- Identify, document, and recommend actions for process improvements;
- Review documents to assure applicable requirements;
- Use basic computer systems for development of plans, reports and transmittal of e-mail correspondence;
- Possess exceptional written and oral communication skills;
- Work with management and operational personnel at all levels.

Training, Qualification, and Experience Requirements:
Position can be filled at the Facility Rep II or Technical Consultant I/II level.
-Minimum of 20 years' experience in performance of the technical function.
-Expert Level understanding of requirements documents associated with the technical function.
-Desired experience in TRU waste characterization and certification activities is a plus.
