Job Description

Responsibilities:  The Weather Anchor/Reporter is responsible for researching, gathering and presenting weather information and general news stories for presentation on newscasts.

  • Produce weather material in a fair, accurate and balanced manner
  • Present weather information for all platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging, and meaningful
  • Tell the day’s weather stories in a way that connects with and captivates viewers
  • Develop and pitch story ideas
  • Significant daily contribution to digital weather, including writing a forecast discussion and managing social media updates, forecasts and severe weather alerts
  • Deliver Storm Team 4 taped and live weather segments for audio/video partners
  • Cover, write, produce and report live from the field on stories related to weather, the environment and climate change
  • Help define weather impact everyday beyond just the forecast
  • Issue weather warnings and alerts
  • Record and deliver promotional announcements when assigned and make promotion appearances as required
  • Participate in community events including school talks

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience producing/reporting weather
  • Minimum 3 years of experience on-air
  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or related discipline
  • Must have working knowledge of computer graphics system such as MAX, MAX Reality and experience using forecasting tools including Doppler Radar and Satellite maps
  • Must be willing to work in Washington, D.C.
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have ability to work any of a 24x7 shift
  • Must have ability to work flexible hours when needed
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Must be able to ad-lib effortlessly in various types of situations, particularly breaking news
  • Membership in the American Meteorological Society
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • Up to date on and interested in current news events
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with people while under pressure
  • Knowledge of laws of libel, slander and applicable FCC rules and regulations
  • Upbeat personality and quick wit
  • Familiarity with local leaders a plus
  • Team player who is flexible
  • High degree of integrity and professionalism
  • Strong storytelling skills
  • Motivated and has ability to work on own unsupervised
  • Displays a positive work ethic
  • Strong organizational skills

Additional Requirements:
